Bt contract problems

I am just trying to work out where i stand from a legal point of view to add weight to any problems i may encounter.

In early January 2008 i rang bt for a MAC code because i wanted to change supplier but they offered me a very good deal of 6 months free then 6 months at £2 off so i took it.

Today i rang for a MAC code because i fancied a change (going to O2) i was told that i had an 18 month contract because i had taken the 6 months free but i have a letter dated 15 January 2008 saying "I am pleased to confirm your acceptance of a new 12 month contract with BT Total Broadband"

BT have said thay are going to listen to the phone call and ring me back to see if i agreed to 18 months which im pretty certain i didnt (is 12 months ago) If the letter clearly states 12 months does it matter what the phone call says or does the verbal statement overwrite the written?

Apologies for the length of this hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance
Kaisersoze

I assume that if they have a recording of you agreeing to an 18 month contract then that overrides the letter - unless you signed something stating 12 months?

Though you are probably right and you didn't agree to 18 months - if they have no proof of the 18 months go to the complaints department and threaten to escalate the matter that should shut them up hopefully

I had a similar problem with BT a while back. They to said they would check the tapes but found they did not have it, I suspect the same will happen with you and they will have to agree with you.

I hope so, i have no real problems with them and the deal they originaly gave me was really good but i knew i would want to change at the end of the 12 months to try someone new so i wouldnt have agreed to 18 months.I just feel they are trying it on a little bit and because of this i am going to move my line rental to sky when i get the tv package.

Line rental with Sky is only £10 per month and you get free broadband (basic) and Skytalk which is free calls evenings and weekeends. The only downside to Sky is the costs of 0845 and 0870 numbers are higher but if you make use of saynoto0870 it helps keep the bills down.. Calls to Sky are free if you are a Skytalk customer also.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It costs £10 per month for landline, broadband and eve/w/e calls? I don't think so. You have to add a lot of added bundled televison rubbish before it is available for that price.

Both BT and Sky bundles start at about £40 per month.

And with both, you have to add another £10 to £20 before the tv package is worthwhile (and with BT it can be cheaper since you can choose, say, only a movies and a sports bundle as a base which is not an option with Sky.)
  • sky are a ripoff i wouldnt touch them with a 10 foot bargepole

Why do you think that? I certainly don't feel I'm being ripped off by them. What we're saving having SKYTALK Unlimited as opposed to BT almost covers the cost of our SKYPLUS package. I'm very happy with them and whilst you can't please everyone, I'm sure a LARGE % of their customers are very satisfied with the service they provide.
  • UPDATE: Had a phone call from BT today told me they would remove the extra 6 months if i paid for the 6 months i had free, i said no and told him to prove i had an 18 month contract......he couldnt. The remaining 6 months were removed anyway and i now (after getting badgered to take a new deal) have a mac code and have just ordered O2 broadband 3 months free and £5 off as my mobile is with them.

As they cheesed me off that much i have moved to sky line rental as well as they offer free evening and weekend calls for only £10 a month. Cheaper than BT.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query.

Sorry, didnt choose my words very well, i meant to say the landline alone
    is £10 per month.
Sky basic which includes Sky, broadband and Skytalk is available for £16.50
adding the two together is £26.50 per month.
