It's almost certainly overkill, but FWIW I keep my Keepass password file in a Truecrypt volume.

LOL that's about as secure as you can get!
  • Or use Truecrypt to set-up a secure file area, the multi-algorithms are currently "unbreakable".

I`d go along with that Encrypted > Hidden Volume :D

Let's be paranoid and use a Blowfish 448bit encryption key algorithm
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

I'm not sure it's down to being paranoid exactly. I keep copies of the data on both my PC and a flash drive that I carry around with me. The way I look at it is how relaxed would I feel if either of those were lost or stolen!

Some may scoff at this idea but I believe it to be one of the most secure methods for the home user. A security expert discussed this a while back but I can't remember who it was. A slight variation might be that you may wish to put the piece of paper in a locked cabinet or safe. The logic behind this is that you are more likely to have a hacker gain control of your computer through your internet connection and obtain the file with your passwords in them that you are to have somebody break into your house and steal them from your safe. Even then, anyone who breaks into your house is probably just after your TV or your car keys.

In relation to the comments here saying that open source software is insecure because the algorithm is available to see you might want to consider the following example: The AES data encryption standard adopted by the american government uses the Rijndael block cipher which is a well documented algorithm. Even though we know exactly how it works are have access to the encryption algorithm it is practically unbreakable, needing many more current computing hours than we have in a lifetime to break it.

Paper is still regarded the safest form of communication.

On a similar topic, anyone know if Glary Utilities is any good at encrypting files and folders?
