Website which stores passwords?

The other day someone was telling me that there is (or are) encrypted website(s) where you can securely store all your username/passwords for pretty much anything (banks/email etc....) which is especially good for people who have several passwords and it's supposedly much safer than writing them down.

Is this true and if so which ones are out there?

Don't go there, use a password protected spread sheet instead.

Agreed, definitely don't go there. Mind you, using a password protected spreadsheet might not be very secure either (depending on exactly which spreadsheet you use).

Well unless you have not protected your computer network and its file system correctly, having a password protected spread sheet is not such a bad idea, I use one and have for many years without issues.

Save passwords into a password protected word document, and create a password protected RAR or ZIP file.

It's very unlikely you'd have a problem, but why take the risk? There are zillions of Excel password crackers out there.

And by using software specifically designed for the purpose you get additional benefits, like the ability to auto-type into password fields etc.

Well write a C# application and use the md5 hash algorithm interop that ships with .NET to create an encrypted file application.

This will do the job, its free, and its open source so you can see there are no nasties.

    http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/

download for windows from the middle link:

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=41019

It allows you to keep groups of password store usernames and urls etc as well.

I'd rather it wasn't open source tbh. Giving a hacker the code is like giving them free entry! Just my 2p worth!
