Good Evening
A friend and I are looking to create a web site together and need to register our domain name and host it.
I know that you can get separate deals for histing and the address but I would like subdomains to be of the form https://www.address.com/subdomain, so I guess they'd need to be from the same place.
That said, I can't seem to find a comparison site anywhere. We probably need about 500 MB to start off and one domain, can anyone advise on where we can get the best deal for hosting (with FTP, if poss) and domain included?
Many thanks
RichyRich

Thanks for this. I wasn't aware that whatever.com/aaaa isn't technically a subdomain, however, the point remains - I wish for the site to look like https://www.address.com/aaaa rather than have https://www.address.com pointing to https://www.hostingsite.com/richyrich/aaaa#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET

This is merely a subdirectory. Absolutely any webspace will allow you to have subdirectories.
Subdirectories then :-)
I'm happy to have subdirectories rather than subdomains.
I don't have the best technical knowledge in the world (as you can tell!) so maybe I will try explain a bit better what my requirements are:-- My friend and I would like to start a web site. To do this, we need web hosting and a domain name
- The domain name we would like is available
- It is my understanding that if we buy the domain name from one place (say, for example, https://www.123-reg.co.uk) and the hosting from another (say, for example, https://www.50megs.com) then the domain name would be "located" at https://www.123-reg.com and "point" to https://www.50megs.com, so when you went to my domain name (let's for arguments sake say it's https://www.richyrich.com), you could type https://www.richyrich.com into your browser but that would either (a) change to https://www.50megs.com/richyrich/index.html after you press "Enter" or (b) remain as https://www.richyrich.com but have https://www.50megs.com/richyrich.com/index.html within a frame
- What I need (want) is for the actual file path to be https://www.richyrich.com/index.html (and the same for subsequent pages)
- It is my belief that to do this I would need to buy hosting and the domain name from the same place in order to have the setup as described in (4)
- Being a moneysaver, I wish to buy it from the cheapest place possible
- Does anyone know where that would be?
And sorry for not being clear

Buy a domain for under a fiver a year (.co.uk) and them host the site where you want. https://www.3ix.com has been fine with me.
be careful of free domains with hosting as you are locked in with that company and if you want to move your site to another host you will find that as they gave you the use of the domain included they still actually own it.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -

Rich
ook... lets go through your list
1 - great!
2 - great!
3 - no
what will happen is that you buy your domain name from 123-reg.. and then you'll change your NAMESERVERS, to ns1.50megs.com and ns2.50megs.com (made up the nameservers!) and then when you go to https://www.richyrich.com, the nameserver entry on the domain, points the site straight to the server, which is basically an IP address..
if you're paying money for hosting, and they don't give you nameservers, you're wasting money!
and, from a web design point of view, frames are evil!
4 - yup.. you need to have nameservers set to point to your hoster.
5 - of course
6 - 123 reg is who i use for my domain registrations, and then i change the nameserver to my host. I'm a reseller host, so i can have multiple websites hosted in the same place, and it costs me around £150 for the year, which isn't the cheapest by far, but when i'm hosting companies websites there, I NEED it to be good quality, and i get LOADS of space and bandwidth... personally, i'd avoid anyone who offers "unlimited" as it just isn't feasible.
look at something that matches your requirements. bear in mind, if you're hosting 500mb of things, and 1 person looks at it all, that'll be 500mb of bandwidth.
i have a site that uses about 5gb a month, and the site is only 100mb!

no,, if you have the domain (https://www.abcdef.org) that will be in the address bar wherever it is hosted.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
