When faced with a situation like this and the shop is clearly ignoring your rights as a customer it's infuriating. One tactic I once tried that worked was to return to the shop at 5;25pm and complain about the item just as they're about to close. When they mention that you will have to leave - refuse! The worst they can do is go fetch a police officer who can only ask you to leave. At best they will relent and deal with the problem as they are legally obliged to do anyway.
The last (and definately the last !) Sony product I bought was a £700 DVD recorder, before they were cheap. As I had quite a few VCD's I checked that it would play these. Both the details on the display product and the salesman told me it did. I installed the machine and started to read the instructions only to see it clearly stated in the manual that it did not play VCD's.Took it back and got a £300 Phillips an apology, and a refund on the difference. (Empire Electrical). I saw the same DVD recorder a few days later in the Sony Centre in the Meadowhall in Sheffield. Out of curiosity I asked the assistant if it played VCD's - "Oh yes" he said. "No problem" I then informed him "Errr,,, - actually it won't." He got the manual eventually and ate his words! I rather enjoyed it.
Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !
  • We had a similar problem with a surround sound system bought around 3 years ago from a sony centre in Staines - the thing never worked - the sound kept cutting out every hour or so (though it always seemed to be at the most crucial part of the soap opera/film/news item we were watching) which sort of defeats the object of a surround system in my book.

As with the OP we were told that Sony Centre had nothing to do with Sony - they did send it off for us to the sony depot near Heathrow. It eventually, after a few weeks, came back to us with a note describing the fault but unfortunately didnt seem to have been repaired as it continued to cut out. My OH eventually did get his money back from the Sony Centre by complaining very loudly on a Saturday afternoon when the shop was full.

I would never ever buy anything from SonyCentre again and was disgusted with the aftersales service and the confusing name. I am also suprised that Sony do nothing about this as it could also put disgruntled customers off Sony products. If something is not working after such a short space of time you want your money back so that you can purchase a new replacement - and not make do with a repaired product.
