payg iphone versus contract iphone

Hi,
I've got the PAYG iPhone. Like you, its hard to find out if you have to top up every month. I only wanted the internet and wifi and was told by both O2 and carphone warehouse that you need to top up every month or else the 3g and wifi would not work, I thought they were wrong.
After the first month, I didn't top up. I got a text message saying I was entering the second month of my free wifi and 3g so they were wrong (had it about 2.5 months now and its still working).
Unfortunately I can't answer your question yet re topping up. I'm still on the original £10 (only spent 50p), but I will reply when I top it up.0 -
hi,
the way i read it when i was looking into this when it first came out on payg is that you dont need to top up, say £10, every month. that should be given seeing it is 'pay as u go' or that will drfeat the purpose of paying £350-400 for the phone on top.
however if u do top up regularly £10, 15, 20 etc every month then u get the bonus they offer u (free o2/landline mins or whatever). so that is the only advantage of topping up every month, but of course u dont have too if u dont use up ur £10, that will just run till its all used up.
as for the unlimited web/wifi it states it is free for the first 12m and it so should be regardless of top up.
i think thats how it works from the info given on the website, hope that helps..

Well basically you have answered the question if you have had your phone and have only ever put £10 on it and you have had it 2.5 months thats just what I want. Some supposed payg phones require a monthly top up and the minutes don't roll over so not really payg. I want to be able to put £20 for eg on the phone and then top up when it runs out whether thats in one month or three.0 -
To get the O2 freebie deals such as "favourite place" (and the various other offerings such as free texts/internetional calls/etc.) you will need to top up atleast £10 every month by your "anniversary date" or you will lose the freebie indefinitely.
Not topping-up however will not affect your 12 months of free internet.0 -
I am not bothered about those two deals. All I want is to pay my £10 get my 500 minutes and only top up again when those 500 mins run out.
Just can't get my head round how it works, if I pay £10 and I get 500 mins to uk landline and 02 mobiles. If I then text someone or call another mobile how does it get charged. I realise it will come off the £10 credit. I assume that 500 mins for £10 works out at 2p per minute. If I spend 100 mins on a uk landline that will mean I will have spent £2 of my £10 credit. I could then send 10 text messages which will cost me a further £1. Then if I choose not to use the phone for two months then I should still have £7 credit left on my phone. Does that make sense?£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far
+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

Just looked at the tarriffs again, basically payg is not payg its contract but your not tied in. If you have to top up £30 a month then you might as well just be on contract and enjoy the benefits.
Why on earth can you not just buy credit which you top up when it runs out instead of forcing you to top up every month. And what use are free phone calls from your postcode. I don't need my mobile at home I have a landline.£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

If you don't top up again by the 1 mth anniversary date (you will get a text 2 days beforehand to warn you it's due) then your free minutes will expire and any calls/texts made subsequently will come from your £10 credit. If and when you top again, once your credit runs out, you are not guaranteed to immediately regain your free texts/minutes, if at all.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

That's not how it works. I believe that if you top up and get 500 minutes free, those minutes will expire the next month - if you don't top up - and you will then be paying 25p per minute for your calls. The free allowance is a reward for topping up per month, and the reward expires at the end of that rolling month.
So, if you top up on the 5th, you will have until the 5th of the following month to use the minutes, or they will expire. Hope this helps?0
