Am I bound by my contract

I have an 18 month contract with Orange for my broadband and homephone. I am just coming up to 12 months, but find the internet is constantly going down.
A guy in my local Carphone Warehouse store tried to get me to move to Talk Talk but am I bound by my contract with Orange? He seemed to think I could change but would incur charges. Does anyone know where I stand?

They will let you leave, but will charge you an early termination fee (equivalent to the monthly charges due to the end of your 18 month minimum period).

Also isn't TT also another 18 month contract?

Thanks. I think I will sit it out then check all the options available to me at time of renewal. Its all much a minefield!
