bt openworld connection problems

Hi when I was at my parents house over the weekend I wanted to access my emails. My parents are on bt dial up and a box comes on screen in order to connect to the internet. I foolishly put my email address and password into the box and tried to connect to the internet. When it wouldn't connect, I realised my mistake and put my parents details back in place. Since then my parents haven't managed to get an internet connection and we don't know why.

Can anyone help please? My 83 year old mum is fretting a bit incase she is missing something important.

TIA

sounds like when you put the details back you didn't put them in right, possibly the password has been changed since those details were written down, password case incorrect?
any other clues such as error mesages?

Hi I have had another look at my parents computer and, it seems that the computer is connecting to the internet but not displaying any pages or allowing any emails to get through. There are the following messages

Cannot find server or DNS Error internet Explorer.
    Detecting proxy settings

for the email the faults are : -
The server could not be found (account 'mail.btopenworld.com' POP3 server; 'mail.btopenworld.com', Error no0x800ccc0D

I am worried about fiddling about too much incase I make things worse.

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

    TIA

They are using Widows 2000 professional (I think).

I'm not sure if that has a system restore.

How much worse could it get? you already broke it :):)

There is a number of ways to get to the dial up settings...

Open Internet Explorer and re-enter all the username and password info in the box when it appears (be careful of CaPs LoCk).

Once you enter the details correctly it should connect okay (and you will be able to retrieve emails).

Yes well and truely broken :o

We can access the internet but not any web pages, so I am assuming that the username and password are working correctly.

I imagin that I have changed some 'settings' that need to be restore.... but don't know how.

Why do you think you can access the internet if you cant get any sites up or emails??

There is usually a scrolling box of info when the PC connects

You can usually hear it dialling and having a little squeeky scratchy conversation before going silent and seeing the following:

    Dialling number
    Verifying username and password

Yes got the dialing tone, and 2 little computer screens appear bottom right tool bar, and flash showing a download speed when clicked.

windows 2000 doesn't have system restore unf, laughable i know as windows me did.
    did.
Suspect the problem is net work settings, next time you connect(2 little computer screens appear bottom right tool bar) open a command prompt*
click start, in the "run box" type cmd and press enter
a black window will come up with a prompt c:\
type ipconfig and press enter let us know what appears, will be boring

    Thank you.

I was wondering if I could simply 'create a new connection' and delete the old one?

I have downloaded Firefox to disc and was planning to install it on the computer to see if that would work as their browser until the cavallry arrived. Mum could access her Emails through yahoo.

What do you think .... would it work?

    TIA
