There is a note on my account letting me know they'll be taking the charges out :o
From what you describe, I would not expect you to have incurred any charges. A&L always reorder transactions so that the debits are listed before the credits, but that does not necessarily lead to charges, even where the 'running balance' drops below your overdraft limit. I have, on several occasions, transferred a large sum of money between two savings accounts through my A&L current account. I have transferred the money onward on the same day it arrived in my current account, leading to the withdrawal appearing first on my statement (taking me several thousand pounds beyond my overdraft limit, notionally) and I have never incurred any charges for that. The overriding condition of doing the above is that the funds must be showing in your available balance at the time you make the transaction.

The only possible difference I can see between what I describe and what you have done is that manual online transfers at A&L are not carried out during the day, but overnight, whereas cash withdrawals may be processed on the same day. However, if no other payments were made out of your account during that day or the next, then you must have been allowed to withdraw funds from your account at a cashpoint that were not available for withdrawal, which should not be possible.

Strangely enough, what happened to me did actually happen in my last job where I was paid, in this instance, on a Friday. But the muppet on the phone tried to tell me I had been paid on the Saturday and the DD had gone out on the Friday - which I shot down in flames as I knew I had been paid on the Friday and had my payslip and the statement in question in front of me.
If they tried to tell me I cant access my money until Monday I will be telling them where to go. In fact, Im going to ring them now. It will be interesting to see what they have to say about this!!!

Well if you were paid on Friday and the direct debit was due to go out on Friday, then obviously you would always run the risk of getting charged. Automated payments like direct debits and standing orders are the first things a bank processes in its overnight run - normally before any incoming funds, so it's very likely the money had not yet arrived in your account at the time your outgoing payment was processed. You would have been able to access the money on Friday - just not early enough on Friday for a direct debit or standing order that depended on it.

I've just spoke to a helpful bloke (must be a first)

He said (Eureka, thank god someone who knows what they are on about) that shouldnt make a difference. Its just the way the bank works and there shouldnt be adverse information and neither should anyone be charged for this sort of thing. I was never charged, I have had the same direct debit go out the same time every month and am not charged. They just decided at random that month to place a marker on - which he says is wrong.
So there you go mum - form the horses mouth - you shouldnt be charged.

Apples and pears? The OP is talking about cash being removed and when there is a positive balance on her account but - allegedly - the credits are then later placed above the debits and creating a transient in-day o/d situation?

In your case ... if a DD is due out on the same day that salary is due in ... you are always at risk of being charged if the DD takes you overdrawn. As the general requirement (as masonic correctly states) is that cleared funds are in the account the working day prior .. ie the Thursday in your example.

    Blimey. Wonders will never cease.

I have just checked my account and lo and behold it is correct - my pay is in, showing like this...
    DIRECT DEBIT CDE PLC 100.00
    DIRECT DEBIT ABC PLC 194.00
    BANK CREDIT, XYZ PLC, 860.58

have they finally sorted their systems out????

Just a little update on this, A & L have refunded me the £30 "as a gesture of goodwill". I've opened a new account at the co - op xx

There is a secure message facility within your online area. Go to 'help' for how to use it.

I just wanted to add my two cents - their secure message facility is pants. When you are even able to send a secure message, there is less than 30% chance that the reply has anything at all to do with what you sent them.

That's my experience anyway. I like A&L but this really lets them down.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.
