I suppose you could put a photo of yourself on aged 25 looking youthful, slim and enthusiastic then watch their faces when the 40 year old you turns up to interview.
They couldn't complain as it's illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age. 0 -
Thanks for all the responses and the majority have backed up my claim that it is not appropriate to put a photo on a ordinary CV. This employment adviser who was watched by thousands of viewers on This Morning yesterday who suggested putting a photo on your CV is Completely out of touch with people out of work and looking for a job.0

Absolutely not appropriate. Your looks are irrelevent and encourage the bad practice of recruiters using irrelevant criteria to select candidates. It's hard enough to stop them as it is without allowing them to decide whether the 'face fits'.
Any HR/recruitment staff worth their salt anonymises applicants' forms/CVs so that selecting managers judge on relevent factors only. Big national employers have systems which automatically do this (NHS Jobs is one) meaning applicants personal details, age, sex, ethnicity etc are never known until a candidate turns up at interview.
I worked in HR until very recently and was regularly mortified at the codified and acceptable discrimination that goes on in recruitment. Usually about getting a 'team fit' or person that 'fits the working culture' as though these are rigid things that should be protected. Never mind about just getting the most qualified and experienced candidate, if they don't appear to be the sort they would get on with at the pub some recruiters ruled them out.

Leave off the photo and let them make their own mind up without the influence of a photo.

I agree with Janey_uk. Having worked in the recruitment industry, I am mortified when I see people adding pictures on the CV as this is the first thing that gets your attention. This gives the agency/company/HR any opportunity to use their prejudices before you start. Same as you do not have to add your age/date of birth, dependants etc.
Everyone should be entitled to same the chance from the begining and judged on their suitablility for that position.0
