Putting a Photo on your CV

Watching Todays episode on This Morning, they had an employment adviser on regarding producing a CV. Surprisingly she stated that it is better to put a photo of yourself on the CV to make it stand out.
This goes against everything I have been told so far about producing a CV as the employer is not interested in what you look like. What do others think ?

You do need to show them your passport to prove you are eligible to work in the UK.

I see a lot of CVs, I'd say less than 5% have a photo on it!

I don't see a problem with including it really. After all they are going to meet you if you get an interview/job.

Its proviso to the usual stuff around facial tattoos/peircings.

    If I was cute/a hunk, I'd put a photo on :D:D:D

Tv ads either have attractive people to make you wish you would be there or are one of them, or not attractive people to make sure you stare at the product.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

An good employer will not employ you on the merit of how good looking you are rather on your background/worth ethic?

Exactly, so whats the problem putting one on?

There isn't a problem there's just no point. Any modelling agencies will require to a photo shoot anyway, because lets face it these things can be digitally enhanced.

Saw Sadie Frost once in Morrisons in chalk farm. Dog rough.

  • There was a phase in the 90s when photo CVs were THE BIG THING but very much out of fashion these days. As a recruiter, I always feel slightly mistrustful of someone who thinks their best selling point is their appearance - are they trying to distract from some lack of real content in their CV?

I suppose these days it may make your CV stand out from the ever increasing crowd, but usually only good for giving recruiters a laugh - it's odd how unselfaware most people are - often seen more likely candidates on Crimewatch ;) .

  • If a recruiter picks you out because they like your photo, well, that's their issue. You're the one with the advantage aren't you?

I'd imagine it can work to your disadvantage too if you look a bit shifty, but the simple answer to that is don't put a photo on :)

No decent employer would make a selection based purely on looks, but if it gets you an interview, then where's the harm?

I've just got back from some recruitment/design seminars and (obviously it's a slightly different area to most people on here) but they were ALL about making your application about YOU, the prospective employee. I have a photo on my online portfolio, partly because I want everyone to see how ravishingly good looking I am ;), but mainly so that after trawling through 150 CVs, they have that extra little chance of remembering me.

That said, I wouldn't put one on my word doc CV, and I certainly wouldn't put one on if I was applying to any job that wasn't in the creative industry.

I deal with recruitment at my firm and see a fair few CV's.
On occasion, I will get some with photo's on - and they do stand out...but not really for the right reason.
I always think they just look a bit naff, regardless of whether you look like Brad Pitt or not. That is just my personal opinion though, and it wouldnt put me off bringing someone in for interview if their qualifications and experience were right.

I used to know a bloke who was our external IT contractor who had his photo on his business cards - seems like a similar thing to me. All a little too '80s if you ask me.
