We needed some new passport foto's and used this web site;

Passport Photo's

If you have a digital camera you can enter your face photo, then crop it etc; if needed. The site then displays a 6"x4" photo of your 6 mug shots, complying with the official format size etc. You can then download this photo or print it yourself etc. They also have some free offers for the printing.

We took our downloaded photo, on a cd, to Tesco who charged me 15p for a photo print of the 6 mug shots.

I looked in the photo booth at Tesco , to compare. The booth charge is £3.50 for 4 mug shots - what a saving I just made. :D

Some chemists will take polaroid passport photos. They use passport approved paper and adhere to the exact size requirements.

No they don't - at least not the one that took mine. They were too close and my head takes up most of the photo - not acceptable for official use.

You can DIY them and it's cheaper still. Follow the photo guidelines that come with the application form.

For my sons new passport, I sat him in front of the freezer (white background!) and took some snaps. I cropped and resized the best one and printed it out on normal photo paper.

Passport office were happy with that :)

Great idea, however do take note of the following guidance:

    http://www.passport.gov.uk/downloads/PLE_04Eng-Photo.pdf

Especially the bit about the print out must be 1,200 dpi resolution or better. Also new guidance doesn't allow "enhancing" the digital scans.

no longer allowed to be a white background....has to be 18% density off white and the regulations are changing again from tomorrow

I have just had my sons passport renewed no problems.
They had a special frame on the camera to see how the photo was positioned and a plastic sleave to check again after printing. It must depend on who takes the photo.

    Thanks pin

The regulations are getting stricter by the day and it is unlikely that many self taken pics will be accepted.

They might be accepted by the passport office as they will still give some leeway...but if you go through the post office they will reject anything that isnt up to standard

There should not be any watermarks on the back either but again the ukps is still accepting pics with marks on the back for the immediate future

Still have not got it back!! Posted it on 16 Jan, arrive in Newport on 17 Jan. However its not all doom and gloom. Called yesterday and they said the passport was approved, just not printed yet.

Get a phone call from Newport today saying that I had given them a wrong postcode for my work address (had accidentily given them postcode for my home address) as I am getting new passport sent to work. So I guess I will be getting it soon.

BTW I got a Jumbo passport, don't know if that makes any difference to the time.

So they would accept a 1,200 dpi print from a home injet but not a 300dpi from a professional printer?
