Laptop appears to have died

 Ok, deep breaths....
Just tried to turn my laptop on, it goes to fire up but I'm not sure it's getting anywhere (doesn't sound like it normally does) and the screen is completely blank...not a spark.
Was working fine last night and I've got it set to shut down when I close the lid....I'm wondering if it hasn't closed down properly and completely drained of power (it's charing at the moment) or is that just a stab in the dark?
Ideas welcomed please..

What laptop is it? Try remiving the battery, and turn it on with the mains plugged in only. As soon as its switched on, keep pressing 'del' (or it maybe f1 depending on your laptop). If you still don't see anything, then its probably hardware related...0

Thanks Jay, It's a Toshiba...
Tried that but still no joy
I guess I'm gonna have to take it to a "man who can" unless there's anything else you can think of?"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
If above doesn't work then try removing the harddrive and powering up then. If you try that and nothing happens its going to be a warranty jobby. If the computer has life in it after taking the harddrive out though you have found your problem. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

Also, what lights are lit up on the display? There is normally a light for HDD, a light for battery etc..This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

The lights on the front all light up - as per normal.....the fan normally kicks in as the screen comes to life when I boot up but it's not even doing that and the screen is just completely dead."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
In that case mate i'm afraid its time to call an engineer out. Is it still in warranty?
Thanks is only a click away on this sitelol

I think it may still be in warranty, I shall go trawl the depths of the filing cabinet to check.
Thanks for your help though, as least I can say I've tried before they do the patronising "she's blonde and hopeless" looks.;)"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
The lack of a fan spining up usually points to something more serious. A loose video cable / knacekered LCD or backlight would still allow the laptop to boot up as normal, so I reckon some kind of hardware failure. Though you may be lucky and find either the CPU or a stick of memory has come slightly loose (assuming it only has 1 stick).0
