    OK,

So it's as I expected a waste of money. So back to looking for a water softener.

    Can you drink softened water??

I have looked around this morning and it's a mass of information any clues as to what I need to look out for? I'm tempted to go with rainwater harvest for the loo and washer, but that won't solve my shower/bath/dishwasher problems.

I already have a filter water tap in the kitchen (a proper brita one with three handles) I would like to keep it if possible.

    Thanks

    Rachel

how long have you had the brita tap? and is it worth having it?

I used to work in a place that had combi steamer ovens, due to water hardness the bulk of these ovens where fed by water softeners which used salt to soften the water. One oven was fed thru a brita inline cartridge type softener. When the oven service guys where out the only oven that had its water boiler reasonably clean was the one that used the brita filter. There where several makes of salt softeners used, every one of them gave trouble and where generally high maintenance, the brita one just needed its cartridge replaced yearly. Obviously a domestic situation is going to be slightly different in that you will be using a lot more softened water, however i would have no hesitation in using a cartridge type over salt at anytime.
