o2 broadband info...

Hiya guys I was thinking of getting o2 broadband, the problem is my pc has no wireless capabities. At the moment I'm on the old aol modem which plugs into my pc through the usb connection. Do o2 offer a non wireless connection say for example using a usb connection as well? If not what is my best way to get a wireless connection on my pc?

  • you don't need wireless, an ethernet port on your PC is all that's needed (looks a bit like a telephone socket)

..just about any PC under 5 years old, and many older, has one

If your PC doesn't have an ethernet port (though as DB error says, it most likely will have if it's less than 5 years old), you can still fit a PCI network card to give you an ethernet port. or you can fit a PCI wireless card to give you a wireless link if you prefer. The former costs about a tenner, the latter around £25. You can fit it yourself in 10 minutes. Avoid the USB wireless adapters if you can.
If you are going to have your router near your PC, then I would go for the wired option (using an ethernet cable) every time. Faster and less liable to drop the signal.
The standard O2 Box is a Thomson wireless router, you can connect this via wired or wireless, but if wired you need an ethernet port on your PC, you can't connect it via USB.

You could use a usb dongle for wireless connection.

The device has 4 ethernet ports on it that can be used to connect it to a computer using a wired connection.

You probably won't be able to use your existing usb modem with your 02 username and password as all LLU products are on ADSL2+ and your usb modem is probably ADSL(1)

Something like this will easily add ethernet if you don't already have it http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=104991

Ok guys I just phones my current supplier AOL and asked for my MAC code. They offered me a few deals, pants really, told them I still wanted to leave and they said my code will be emailed out in a few days.
Whilst on the phone the woman asked what deal with o2 I was going for (16mb)and she told me I would probably not even get 10mb, people in the uk rarely do. Is this pants as well or is she telling the truth?

Its a half-hearted truth.... it all depends on how far away from the exchange you are really. What speeds were you getting with AOL? probably nowhere near what you'll get with O2, its sort of a cheap remark and a tad petty of them to say something like it, no wonder they have a poor reputation for customer service... sign up fast to O2 and get 3 months free on their Pro package. Do you have an O2 mobile, either Paygo or Contract? Extra savings to be made...go through Quidco too.

PS: I'm moving to O2 from Sky, only because I am dumping Sky for TV soon anyway, with Sky I was told I would get up to 16mb, I was getting 14.2mb as I live very close to the exchange. So getting more than 10mb is possible, but then again most folk dont almost live right next to the exchange

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

If you don't get more than 8mbit they should let you downgrade to the basic package - though you probably will if you are near the exchange (it should give an estimate when you sign up too)
