Hi
continuing from another thread, I have a new question(!)
My contract with three is all but up, and I want a new phone, but to stay with 3.
I want to know if I can call them up and say I have a new sim card here and ask them to port my old number over to my new one without having to go via a PAYG on another network...
has anyone tried this and failed?
Has anyone tried this and succeeded??
Cheers

You misunderstand.
When you ask a service provider for a PAC, it is in order for you to be able to take your number from one network to another.
What you are suggesting is an inter-netowrk migration, ie move my old number from one SIM card to a SIM card with another number already on it. 3 will be agreeable to doing this providing that you accept an upgrade directly from them. However, if you go to a dealer and try to do this, then it will not work. The number will have to be ported off of the current network before it can be ported back.
Also, if you are going via a dealer with a cashback, they will almost certainly want to know at the point of you placing the order whether or not you are intent on porting a number to the new purchase.0 -
Steve_xx answered your question in the other threadSteve_xx wrote:If you were to take an upgrade with 3 directly, then yes, they will migrate you without a problem, alowing you to keep your number. But the deal may not be as good as it would be if you started afresh with a dealer.
However, if you decide to upgrade with The Acme Phone Company, and on the same network this will not be easy to do. First you will have to get the PAC from your existing service provider and port the number onto another network for a period. Then you can port it back. Porting means that you move the number from one network to another.
The Acme Phone Company will get a commission from the network for signing you up with a new number, and part of that commission may be paid back to you in the form of a cashback offer. The Acme Phone Co may still get its commission if at the point of ordering you tell the dealer that you want to use a ported number.
All networks pay Mobile dealers/shops more money (that's why they can offer more cashback on deals) when they connect a NEW customer to the network, what you want to do is keep your number and get a new phone with a new contract, the networks would see you as an existing customer who is upgrading and not as a new customer!!
If you want to keep your number and take advantage of a cashback deal then you would have to port to a PAYG (on another network) and then port back, as discussed here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=140600Nearly debt free
