A few years ago i would of agreed with white horse that depression was put on and exaggerated. I am still of the opinion that some of it certainly is because there are always people wanting something for nothing.

I understand that you can get DLA if you have a disability and still work.

I had PND after the birth of my first child and since then I refuse to pass judgment on if an individual is 'putting it on'

I think I am semi intelligent and rational yet my thoughts were totally irrational and I KNEW they were irrational yet I couldn't stop thinking them. I developed a fear of being left alone with our baby I was sure if my husband went to work something dreadful would happen to him or to us. In the same way I refused to leave the little one with anyone even my own parents Only I could be trusted no one else. It was a very bizzare experience.

There was no way I could of worked through that (I was on maternity leave) so there is no way I would expect someone else to work through it.

  • there are a few genuine cases of depression and bad backs that mean the sufferer cannot work at all. But the majority of cases are either put on or exaggerated.

its unfortunate that people get tarred with the same brush, but that is life.

its the system that is wrong.

I do not begrudge genuine cases a penny. In fact, i would double or triple genuine cases benefits if the majority of fakers and scroungers had theirs cut.

JSA should not be a lifestyle choice and you should certainly never be better off on benefits than working.

Having read this thread, i felt i had to make a comment. I wholly agree with The_White_Horse comments, that the current benefits system is open to abuse. You have to look at the whole picture of the last 12 years under New Lab rule. Immigration have gone out of control, the housing needs demands have gone up (partly due to the immigration increase). The public services like NHS and schools are overcrowded.

I just read that 10 schools in UK funded by taxpayers don't speak english or teach in english!! How is that right?

The benefits system needs a massive reform, not just to cut expenditure on SS spending, but to prioritise those who have the right to live here and need support. It is going to take a long time to change the benefits culture reliance we are seeing here that has developed in the past decade. I do really despair that UK is fast becoming a dumping ground. No pride, no respect.

What does bother me is this notion that all doctors get paid £100k a year to play golf. It just isn't true,

    Hang on a second.

We are not bitter at the success of others. We are bitter at people being allowed to fail and being successful for it. Why try to better yourself when it leads to disadvantage.

It's that the not core problem?
  • No chinese whispers r.e the girl who had baby at 15 and living in flat with boyfriend. I KNOW her! Visit them, the baby etc. Seen with own eyes. It is legal because she turned 16 JUST before giving birth, as as the dad wanted to move out too they are classed as a "family unit".

Just to clarify. It happens - so no chinese whispers and I think it is incredibly wrong. The baby doesnt have a chance. Dad doesnt want to work, mom doesnt want to work - so its a learned behaviour of not WANTING NOR NEEDING to work - the baba will more than likely grow up to do the same thing - a lot like children who have criminal parents are more likely to be criminal themselves because of role modelling, labelling, learned behaviour and reinforcement.

Yes of course NOT all turn out like this....but it is not a good start for a little one...

Anyway...I am greatful for all the things I have...because i have worked my bum off for them and I own everything apart from where I live...the reason I become a little bitter over the past few weeks as we literally in a couple of weeks have no where to live, we cannot afford to get another car so my fiance can get to his training placement and there is NO help for us, despite the fact that we have worked, want to work and want to be independant....

....why do those who CHOSE not to work (NOTE NOT THOSE WHO CANNOT DUE TO ILL HEALTH) get help and a place to live and benefits?!?

I used to say that people with depression should just snap out of it and that it didn't exist. Until it hit me that is :o
As you say passing judgement is something I wouldn't now do, I'm, I suppose semi intelligent as well, I've had minor bouts before, but the big one hit me last year when I was posting on here, but you would never have known. I'm quite happy seeing the recession really, cos I never thought I'd see 2009 :D
Funnily enough though, although I was a wreck, I did work throughout it.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Strange, I don't fell disavantaged compared to people on SS.
