Tiscali broadband connection speed

I signed up for the Tiscali 2Mb Broadband and phone calls package(£19.99) and got the confirmation through the post today which said I am going to get 1Mb broadband.

I rang them and they said that my phone line could not support 2Mb. I have previously had 2Mb with BT so this seems a bit odd. They said that with BT you get 2Mb sometimes but this drops at peak times. They said that with Tiscali my phone line can not give 2Mb all the time so instead I will get 1Mb all the time.

Is this right or are they trying to con me?

Sounds like nonsense to me. You will either get 1Mbps or 2Mbps on BTw's IPstream services. If you was activated on 2Mbps, you would not sometimes get only 1Mbps - it would be a case of the ADSL would drop altogether until it could reconnect at 2Mbps again.

The reason Tiscali may be offering 1Mbps could be due to the data supplied by BTw (the line attenuation), as there are limits at which they can provision 2Mbps, 1Mbps and 512Kbps.

How long ago was you on 2Mbps?

Quite the reverse with me.....my line would only take a 512K connection due to distance from the exchange, so they put me on a 2Mb line throttled down to 512K as it was cheaper for them.....needless to say it didnt work for months.

Sounds like one of their "its not our fault, its yours or bt's" If you were on 2mb beforehand, why shouldn't you be on them now. Tiscali take all the customers they can get, then don't deliver, they are oversubscribed and can't provide the speeds they advertise.
It took me over 18mths to get away from them, they wouldn't supply MAC Codes, but I eventually got one and away I went. :j
