How do I stop condensation?

Kinda money saving I s'pose.... well, I'll save a bucket load not having to resort to new double glazing! It only seems to be me in our street to have this problem and we've practically all got the same windows!!

Any ideas? It's beginning to drive me nuts. Every window in the place soaking and I'm having to wipe them all down every morning.

Appreciate any help :)

  • Hi

Do you dry clothes on radiators, if so thats the first thing you must stop doing. Also try and sleep with bedroom doors open it allows the air to circulate better, open your windows for 30 mins or so as soon as you get up. I don't think you will stop it 100% but you may be able to reduce it. Its just moisture in the air which clings to the coldest surface ie your windows which in turn turns to water. Oh always open bathroom window whilst showering and bathing too x

You could buy a dehumidifier which absorbs condensation

The only thing that will stop this is to regularly open your windows I'm afraid. It's the lack of air circulation that causes condensation and the warm air hitting a cold window and releasing the water vapour in the air.

You can try a bowl of salt in the windowsill, that will absorb some of it or I think Wilko's are still selling those tray things that absorb damp. We have one of those in the cellar and it's amazing how much water end up in there.

Is it old double glazing with PVC frames?

If so get some trickle vents fitted.

I have a problem with condensation on the windows that are not double glazed, I open the windows each morning when I get up, if its very bad I use a blade to clean the water off the windows and mop it up and then open the window to dry the windows off....... we leave all the doors ajar but still get condensation when its very cold. I have asked our landlord several times to replace the three windows that are single glazed, still waiting.........

Condensation in the bathroom can be helped by running cold water into the bath before the hot water.

Here are a couple of threads from the In My Home board that may help:

    double glazed windows and condensation

    Mould & Condensation issue

If you go to that board and type 'condensation' into 'search this forum' it will give you a few more.

  • Speaking from experience, a de-humidifier is the only way to go. Not only has our condensation problem reduced dramatically but our house is warmer as a result. Thus a saving on heating costs :T
  • not sure if it works but cut a potato in half, rub on window, buff up with dry cloth.

You have to let me know if it works. My nan told me that one when I was young :D

She also said if you clean the inside horizontally & the outside vertically then when you have a streak you know which side its on!
