I've just had a look at my mother's laptop and it's running very, very slowly. I'm talking about 10-20s for a file explorer window to open.
It's a Dell Inspiron 2200. It's only got 256M of RAM which I assume is far too small for Windows XP.
The processor itself is barely running at 10%.
My other thought was a virus, but it's scanned regularly.

Its far to small to run efficently
Id recommend 1 gig ram for a BIG boost in speed
Download HIJACK THIS (Top right)

I'll see if can do that.
Meanwhile, I found this:This notebook came with 256 mb of ram, which everyone knows just doesn't cut it anymore so I went to see about getting additional RAM, but the 258mb, turns out to be non-removable, while the 512 and 1 gig are. Neither the dell website nor manuals tell you anything about this. I only discovered this when I took a look inside, and now I have a slow running laptop and there is nothing I can do about it. So before you buy any computers check the website ( https://www.crucial.com ). They'll give you the info ...
How do I get to the RAM slots?Happy chappy0 -

Underneath the laptop. Usually one screw to take out and a plastic flap to remove:idea:0 -

It's the Dell official site and I searched by model.
I looked on Amazon and it was only £7 cheaper.Happy chappy0 -
Why does the Dell part say
"1 GB Memory Module for Dell Inspiron 2200 - 333MHz"?
What does the frequency refer to?Happy chappy0 -
I'm going to stick more memory in.
What does the 333MHz refer to in regard to the memory?Happy chappy0
