Insuring Car X but then actually driving Car Y insured with your policy?

I handle a lot of Motor Trade Insurance, if the vehicle has been added to the MID as one of their nominated own or stock vehicles the police still sometimes impound the vehicle as they stop the driver who is not named on the policy as they normally provide cover for any employee for business use they frequently impound the car.
If they are driving a car they have just purchased (They are allowed a reasonable amount of time to add it to the database) the police will often stop them and even if they show them the certificate showing they can driver any vehicle in their custody or control they still frequently impound the car even if the driver explains and proves they have just purchased the car and it it within the "reasonable amount of time"
I have also had police stop motor trade clients whilst driving customers cars on test drives or collection / delivery that the customer has not insured themselves so the police stop the motor trader. They inspect the Certificate and then say they do not believe the certificate is valid as it is a laser printed certificate and impound the car (Most motor traders know they have problems with the police pulling them so ALWAYS carry a certificate to show them, I also give them a leaflet the MID have produced to explain how the MID works with Motor traders that clearly spells out that they do not have to declare certain vehicles but they still have vehicles impounded)
I have also had fleet policy holders vehicles impounded as the police stop the vehicle look on the MID and it shows an any driver policy as the drivers covered as "Not declared" (This is the MIDs way of denoting an any driver policy). They have impooounded vehicles in these cases as the police do not always fully understand the MID. (These cases were even where I had spoken to them on the phone and explained this and even given them the Insurers number to confirm it) Some police offices work on the basis if its not shown on the MID or your are not shown as a driver they will impound the vehicle especially if your "face does not fit"#
I'm not saying he will definately have his vehicle impounded just that there is the chance that he gets pulled over by a police man who does an mid check see he is not named on the vehicle he is drivings police and does not believe him that he has Driving Other Cars as it is very unusual to have this at his age and impounds the car. The chances of this are increased if the policeman takes a dislike to him (If he explains to the policeman he is covered and DOCs and stands his ground this can annoys some police officers).
In addition if the car is impounded the pound/police will not normally accept a certificate of insurance with driving other cars on it as proof to release the vehicle (The temporary insurance companies note on their certificates that they cannot be used to release vehicles from pounds and a number of motor insurers are also stating on their certificates that they cannot be used to release vehicles using the DOC section) so he would have to get his father to go down and provide his insurance documents with the vehicle specified on the insurance.0 -

Where is the evidence that the police impound cars of drivers who can show their id and documents?
Sounds like more scaremongering, as under the plan, the car will be insured as will the driver!
Police have the right (and will do on occasion) impound a vehicle if the dirver cannot show an Insurance certificate on which they are either the policy holder or a named driver.
Showing an insurance policy on which they are named but not for that vehicle does indeed show that the individual is indemnified under his/her third party extention to drive it AS LONG AS HE/SHE HAS THE OWNERS CONSENT AND PERMISSION.
Simply showing any old insurance policy does not prove consent or permission of the owner, thus until this can be verified the police do have the right to treat the vehicle as uninsured.0 -
I meant that if I had an accident, "his" insurance would not worry about the fact he is the main driver (but someone else drives it more) as they are not being claimed from.
Actually I think you will find that, although the 3rd party damages will not be claimed from his insurer, they will still be notified of a claim as he is the policy holder against that vehicle, and is deemed somewhat responsible even to a small degree as he gave you his permission to drive the vehicle.
As I said, his insurer will not necessarily have to pay out on the claim however do not be surprised if some insurers actually log a claim against the main policy holder in such an instance. Remember that insurers do share information about claims etc.0 -
Informative posts Andrew, I agree that in theory if he does everything correctly he should be covered by the policy that there are so many potential pitfalls in doing what he proposes.
If any one will find a way of getting out this claim it would be Quinns local claims handles who are renouned for being tenacious, they have very strict targets on claims and are incredibly good at thier jobs. I would not be surprised if Quinn devoted a lot of time defending any claim (Who at the back said its inevitable he will claim!) as a) it could potentially save them a lot of money and their whole company ethos is devoted to trimming claims costs b) They are likely to want to prevent a precident on the driving other cars as it could cost them even more if this became common place (I know it goes on but hardly any companies include DOCs for under 25s now and that is the part of the market that is likely to produce a large quantity of claims with potentially large liability claims)0 -

NOt that strict on claims targets but with the rest of it I agree0 -
The local quinn claims managers I had dealings (There are some classes of business you can't not use Quinn on!) with told me they had quite strict targets on payments and the time allowed in dealing with claims. They were very good at their jobs and if it was my money they were paying out I know they would be my first choice0

Ah yes on payments and time to deal with claims you are correct. There are timescales involved that are put in place by senior management within Quinn to ensure that the claims are dealt with quickly and cost effectively.
Glad you like the way it works, I certainly do!0 -
I would not want to be a third party claiming off of them under a car or liability policy, their next day visits with the cheque book in hand are legendary in the market.
I have had business customers who quite like it as they are often convinced that the liability claims against them are exagerated etc and they like the no nonense way you go in and make the "Godfather" offer! lol
Like most people try best to avoid any material damage risks with quinn though as I prefer to sleep soundly at night...
You gotta admire the man though he has done well and from the people I know who have met him he is remarkably on the ball especially taking into account his original background.0
