I thought about these, but have resisted, because often with back pain you need to provide the opposite of heat - freezing cold, to reduce inflammation. At least this is what various different chiropractors I've visited have done, and what a sports physio at uni recommends (they all have a "special" cold gel, but say at home one can use a frozen bag of peas). Of course, I guess this all depends on the nature of back pain, but cold is much better at helping to induce local anesthesia.

i thought you used the cold when you first get the injury, then heat after?

Hi jetty, having searched around on this in the past, there isn't much medical evidence supporting the use of hot or cold on injuries. It is largely empirical, based on experience about what works, although as said, cold helps to reduce / prevent inflammation / induce local anesthesia. There are some suspect justifications around about the use of heat - "inducing better blood flow to increase healing" but there is no firm medical evidence to support it. I just know all the chiropractors I've visited have used cold packs and gels.

Something rather more useful, worth pointing out to long-term back-pain sufferers - if you sit down a lot / work at desks / computers, make sure you get a wedge seat cushion. Since my chiropractor recommended one (eventually), my condition has improved considerably, such that I haven't been to see him in almost 2 years. It helps/forces you to maintain a body-thigh angle greater than 90 degrees (which ensures correct weight loading in the coccyx, lumbar and thoracic regions).

I know my posting is slightly off-topic for getting a freebie heat treatment sample, but I think its worth pointing out that are there simple long-term solutions like the seat wedge to prevent the need for hot or cold treatments, which is much better than short-term relief - back-pain almost always ultimately comes down to bad posture, even if you think you maintain a good one (even after a back injury, like I had, poor posture exacerbates the condition). And there are other simple improvements, like making sure that whenever you're sanding still, make sure your load is equally distributed on both feet (which are evenly placed) - i.e. no leaning to one side! The seat wedge made the biggest difference for me - 10 years of back pain gone! Had I known this at the start, I could have saved a lot of money on chiropractor fees and various treatment gels & horse-strength pain killers!
