  • TBH I was too consciencious for my own good. That was back in the days when you dealt directly with the taxpayers. Nowadays you call HMRC you get a call centre with no direct access to your file. I feel frustrated myself with the way things have gone cos I have to call them a lot and it's hard not to preach (!). But, I was around for and fully trained in the introduction of Self Assessment and have worked in tax for (OMG) 18 years- someone give me a medal!
Seriously, tax is a priority creditor, they can file for bankruptcy and prison - not meant to scare you honestly - but they are helpful if you know the right things to say and how to get round the system.
Accountants are costly (believe me I know) and if you had a meeting with yours in January I have no doubt whatsoever that they were extremely busy and stressed at the time and perhaps didn't have the time to devote to you cos of that. Your posts indicate your are doing your best to settle up. Keep going, and my offer for PM is still on.

Another £50 to them. Thats £855 so far.

I'm hoping that I will get some money in later this week so I can throw a lump sum at them. Not holding my breath though.

I find self employment has its ups and downs. At the moment there seem to be more downs but i'm sure once i have paid the HMRC the telephone numbers i owe them that all will settle own.

I have never got a grip on the tax thing, the way self assessment works, payments on account etc. Just seen the light and I will never get this far behind...ever.

I will take you up on your offer. Will be in touch xxx

Have they given you a time limit for paying this amount off?

Hmmmm - I agreed a payment plan last year - did not see this huge balancing payment coming so that was not included in it.

I keep paying them something but i am a bit of an ostrich and I cannot speak to people like that on the phone. No doubt they will be in touch soon and I want to ensure they can see i am making a proper effort to pay up and not avoid it.

With everything that is happening with my hubby I cannot face the reality of this save for the getting it paid once and for all.

I'm sure we will get to another agreed plan, i just want to make sure i can pay it off quickly. I really don't like people frowning at me...does that make any sense?

Lemma have you thought about turning your self employment into a ltd co and paying yourself minimum salary and dividends to save tax....it would reduce your payments on account and you would only pay 21% corporation tax....pm me if you need more details..
