    Hi All,

We've been lucky enough to be given a new tv by our friends and want to donate the old one (perfect working order, 28") to charity. I know many many charities don't accept electricial goods anymore due to the time/cost involved in sorting them out but does anyone know of a charity that could find a use for it? preferably in the midlands area

    Thanks

Hi, don't know if your near leicester but you could try loros, they have various charity shops and a hospice

My local Salvation Army now takes electrical items, they had a sign up saying they now took them. Must be quite recent as they never used to take anything.

Perhaps they've had someone professional volunteer their services in checking them over when they're donated. Darn good idea if so.

I was told that it wasn't the time/cost of sorting them out, it was due to safety regulations. They would need to get them safety tested prior to selling them otherwise what would happen if the item blew up or something when the buyer plugged it in?

That and the fact that TV's especially don't shift very well compared to the space they take up for display. I know a charity with a back room full of old tellies as they shift one about every 2-3 months. They put the lamps in the same display space and as such they probably shift 5 or 6 lamps a month for similar prices to 3 or 4 TV's would bring in, and far lesslikely to develop a fault. Equally a telly will take around the same amount of space as a single comfortable padded chair, yet goes for about a half the price! Electronics is one area where there doesn't appear to be much call for vintage, save for early games consoles.

Nice idea about selling it and donating the money, i'd suggest going down that route.

Try your local domestic violence charity. Often women and kids leave with almost nothing and a TV can really help a place seem more like a home.
  • In the West Midlands (possibly nationally), the British Heart Foundation have furniture collection service which will collect TVs.

PS. It really shouldn't be this hard to donate old TVs! The government really should make the manufacturers and retailers run schemes to at least recycle if not relocate/reuse them. Then again... more reuse = less VAT! :-s

This thread is over three years old - I would imagine the OP has disposed of her old TV by now!

Still good for people to know of the British Heart Foundation taking them to sell on though. Wherever we're able to recycle and give folk the benefit so be it! :)

Thanks a lot, ericthekidstone, it's good to know.

see if you have a local British Heart Foundation electrical shop nearby - Google it - as they collect as well and it's a great cause

How can you tell if the BHF shop is an electrical shop or just a clothes store?
