Mid 30's male, married and an Eskimo. Full time at the moment but if the fish keep drying up I'll either move to part time are go self-employed.
Live in a Igloo on the west side of Alaska which was bought for £89,000 in 2003. Put down a deposit of £30k, two seals and a furry hood. Don't think we're in negative equity yet but I notice that they just aren't selling at the moment.
I bought a couple of Igloos in 2005 which were both half melted and needed doing up. I re-built them and put in some laminate and now rent both out for £400 a month. Planning to use both as a pension or to buy more fish.
Currently a bit cold.
Are you concerned about global warming though? Could mean that your investment drips away in value?0 -

It'd be good to own an igloo right now as when the property market goes into meltdown you have liquid assets.
Fish are a good short-term investment, but if you hold them too long they stink.

Currently living in a 4 bed detached house with a £105k mortgage that has just been reduced down to £359 per month. I used to have a part interest only and part repayment mortgage, but I overpaid the interest only bit (and paid it off 13 years early) and converted the repayment to Interest Only. This is because I am an IT contractor and want to reduce my monthly outgoings to the bare minimum for when I am not working and make large overpayments when I am working.
Since joining MSE I have had a 18 month period where I've been manically trying to reduceg my monthly outgoings by using a combination of mortgage overpayment, cashing in rubbish investments, getting better deals on insurance policies and utility bills. My non-food outgoings used to be about £1800pm (with the mortgage alone standing at over £1000pm). My outgoings are now £928 per month, including mortgage).
I'm hoping to further reduce this by putting more money into my offset account and by changing from Fitness First to a cheaper local gym.Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)

GF and I purchased our 3 bed terrace in June 2006 for £126,000
We had £1000 spare after fees etc, so paid that towards the purchase price.
Mortgage therefore was £125,000 and still classed as 100%. We fixed our rate at 5.09% for five years after paying a (i think) £400 fee to get that "prefferential" rate. That rate runs out in about 2 1/2 years.
Our repayments are £737.31 per month.
We overpay by the maximum allowed (20%) each month since day one. This makes our actual repayment £884.75 per month.
We also save hard and don't waste money. I sold my car and now cycle / get the bus to work. GF has a new small (now one year old) car and pays the loan back each month £155 over 5 years.
According to my mortgage spreadsheet, we currently owe about £113,000 on the house.
No idea what it is worth.... same house on same road on Right Move currently at £144,950 although thats been on for 9 months now and not sold.... they haven't even dropped the price?!?!?
Currently have 10k in savings which we will pay a lump off our mortgage when we finish out fixed rate and can therefore do without incurring any fees.
Thats about it.... doing all we can to battle negative equity
Oh and we have our wedding in 2010 to save for.... :eek: :eek:0 -

Ha, this is true! Not that i'm trying to argue with an Alaskan about Alaskan, but isn't it the Finnish that have loads of words for snow?
Just to be serious for a second and blow my Inuit cover, I think that is one of those urban myths that certain languages or cultures have lots of words for snow compared to English.
Whilst there probably are many Finnish and Inuit words for snow, English has many synonyms for snow too: ice, hail, sleet, slush, frost, powder, drift etc.
Anyway, back to fishing in my ice hole.0 -
