I thought it was just me that took the stalks off the mushrooms before buying, sometimes that is depends if im in a hurry and whos around. I dont do the whole lot just a few. I definately pick out the manky grapes. I also try one before buying to see if they taste ok. I like broccolli stalks so i keep them. I dont go buying just the stalks though that others have left behind!!!

wasn't it on one of those 'more reasons to shop at morrisons' advert? stalks cut off broccolli? or am i just making it up? (entirely plausible!)

I remember seeing in one of the (two) supermarkets in Fishguard a sign next to the leeks which said "Anyone who cuts the tops off the leeks will be charged double". :D
Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.

No you are right. Not that I've ever seen the TV advert, but in-store the broccoli display banner says something to this effect.

Their loose broccoli definitely has very short or non-existant stalks - think they are referred to as "broccoli crowns"

Regards trimming bits off I don't want ....

.... the only thing I have a slight "bugbear" against are sweet peppers (capsicums) with very long stalks - I tend to snap these off.
When red peppers cost £3 or £4 or more a kg, and a single pepper weighs 200g with a stalk but only 180g with it removed, I'll take the 10% discount every time !!

As to having fish heads removed - if the display says £3 a kilo and the fish are whole, then of course they are weighed before being decapitated.

It's like chicken - skinless breast fillets cost a little more per kg than ones with skin on, which cost a little more than part-boned ones, which cost quite a bit more per kg than when they come attached to a carcass that also has 2 legs and 2 wings attached !!

But if I go to the fishmonger or butcher and ask for bits - heads, fat, etc to be trimmed then they weigh it afterwards???

But if you select a normal pork chop at £4/kg and get him to trim it and bone it and turn it into a pork loin steak which is on sale at £5/kg, what would expect to be charged ?

The cost of original item at £4/kg and all the extra work you've asked him to do is thrown in for free,

or the final item ("built" to your specification - which is now NOT a pork chop) weighed again at £5/kg ?

If you talk the stalks of they go 'off' quicker!

great typo this one - thanks to the poster for the laugh (made my belly shake more than one of those big, fangled things that used to sell in the Sunday gossip papers for whatever and probably didn't cause any weight loss but did wreck the house).........sorry distracted a little by that one.........

I've this image now in my head of a the ideas of a certain Prince (for those who remember a bit of tabloid rubbish from a decade or whatever ago) finally coming to fruition (excuse the pun) and someone actually standing talking to the tomatoes on the supermarket, then adding a few words on the way round the aisles before getting to the checkout to find they had bought double what they expected!!!!!

Someone call the doctor as I've clearly now lost it!!!!!!

I always drag my hubby shopping when I want leeks and leave him at the veg section with orders to snap off the green tops of the leeks. I head off for the rest of the shopping - I don't want to be associated with him if he's caught...!

I deliberately choose the tomatoes with the spiders left on - as el6724 says they last longer. They're also good for chasing the kids round the house with :D
