I always remove the stalks off tomatoes, not cos i'm tight mind, just cos they remind me too much of spiders, and if one inadvertently should drop on the floor and wasn't picked up, if i came in the room and saw it there i'd have a fit thinking a tarantula (sp) had come to get me
:rotfl: They do look like spiders don't they?:rotfl:0 -

As Mr T says, "every little helps" !!
I actually like the stalks from the mushrooms, but now at least I know why there are always lots of stalks with no heads !!
When I select my veg I will often take bits off that are not wanted, but not to the extent of cutting off bits of broccoli !!, I hate picking up all those extra onion layers and rub the excess off, I have seen others doing this as well, courgettes and marrows often have really long stalks, I snap them off and also stalks are often left on tom's they get removed as well. I have never thought of this to save on weight, but just to keep down the wastage at home. I will have to think more carefully now if there are savings to bemade !!"Dogs come when they are called. Cats take a message and get back to you" :j :j0 -

As you eat the stalks and they taste of er...ummm mushroom, why not just leave them and buy less mushrooms?0 -
If you talk the stalks of they go 'off' quicker - that's why a lot of the expensive stuff (on the vine tomatoes etc) have them left on - so I guess if you don't want to use them for a few days your better off leaving them on and paying the price. Same with the mushroom stalks.
- just thought I'd mention it - other than that don't really have an opinion on this - great thread though!0 -
I deliberately choose the tomatoes with the spiders left on - as el6724 says they last longer. They're also good for chasing the kids round the house with0

Surely the answer to the original question is to look at it as if you are 'selecting' what you DO want rather than 'leaving' what you don't?
If Tesco what you to have what THEY select, they must put it in a packet!0 -
Thanks to everyone for their replies. It's reassuring to know that it's not just me!
I hoped the thread title would interest a few people.
I always carry my Leatherman with me, and we usually go shopping at about 10pm so being subtle about it isn't really a problem.
So I assume it's legal to do this then? It seems like enough people do it and haven't been arrested for it yet!
I eat all the bits of mushroom and don't like tomatoes, so I guess it's just brocolli, and maybe the tops of leeks for me.
I think peeling potatoes etc. is taking it a bit too far...or maybe i'm just not living life on the edge like some of you daredevils
