CPU temperature question

Out of curiosity I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what my CPU temperature should be?
I have an AMD athlon XP 2000MHz and according to PC Wizard it's running at 56 degrees, idle. (not sure how hot it gets on load). And my hard driver are idling at
39 and 36 degrees.
Is this to hot?
Thanks.

Check the temp when you first turn the Pc on - it should be around room temp 20+ degrees C. If it is higher when you first turn - it may be a fault with the bios - look at upgrading the BIOS as it is misreading the sensors - a know problem with some motherboards adding 20 degrees to the reading.
Alternatively have you moved the CPU fan recently or added any parts. Also check the airways are clear - not full of dust etc
My temps start at room temp and raise to approx 40+Rich people save then spend.

thanks. I haven't added or removed anything. I'll check the temp when I start up. What should it be running at? And i'll check the airways too.0

56 degrees is still within safe limits. Set the bios to warn you is it goes above 60 and relax.qui tacet consentire -

lol just tried to get into my bios to do that (and check what BIOS i have) and it's asking for a password, that I don't have/remember. Great.0

remeber athlons run hotter then pentiums dont knwo why its just they way they are and have been for years, if your really worried its easy to add another fan as an exhaust although with some blue peter duct tape and cardboard you can make a very cheap efficiant duct to tunnel the hot cpu air out the case or out the psu depending which way your psu fan blows. If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Can't work out if I have the latest BIOS. CPU-Z says I have version 6.0 but the website for my bios says the latest version is 1.4??0

If I decided to buy a new CPU fan, how do I know what ones are suitable?0

Hi Sue the temps I gave were for a Sempron 2300 not an Intel chip
Goto the website for your motherboard/PC to find out what the latest BIOS should be.
All CPU families have different mountings for the CPU heatsink and the fan fits atop the heatsink so best to replace all together if you do not know the model. You probably have a "Socket A" type fitting, but please confirm this with software - such as https://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra - This will also be able to stress your PC and test the temps underload.
Just check the temp after the PC has been turn off for a few hours - It should be room temp, unless your PC sits in the sun or near a heat source.
As your PC has been running fine so far, don't worry - unless you are having problems - you have not said.Rich people save then spend.

The AMD stock heatsink/fan is fine for a non-overclocked XP2000.
No need to waste your money on a new fan or heatsink.
In a well ventilated case your CPU should run at about 47C - 50C at idle in an ambient temp of about 20C.
As an earlier reply stated 56C is nothing to worry about.
If you wanted to do anything about it then I would suggest just giving the heatsink fins a good old blast with an airduster aerosol.
