ISPs with Binary Newsgroups?

I am looking to get broadband (on dialup at the moment) and would like a service with unlimited downloads and access to binary newsgroups. I can only get 512Kbps and don't need a free modem. Looking to pay less than £18/month, and preferably no connection fee!

Does anyone know which ISPs carry these newsgroups? I was thinking of going with Toucan (just as it is so cheap), but don't know if they have the newsgroups, plus I am a bit wary after seeing some bad reviews.

I think Tesco carry them, but their site is a little short on info. What does the price go up to after 1 year (I assume it is from £14.97 to £17.99)?

AOL, EFHBroadband and Euro1Net were all possibilities, but none carry binary newsgroups. Would I be better off going with Euro1Net and paying for an independent newsgroup service such as Astraweb or Claranews? Euronet seems to be £10/month if you pay 2 years in advance and it has had good reviews.

Thanks.

Rod

  • I've been using EasyNews (https://www.easynews.com) for the last 5 years at $10 a month for 10G transfer - and have yet to experience an issue with them.
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice
  • Agreed. I use easynews as well. Whilst there might be cheaper providers out there, the web interface makes it SO much easier than having to use a newsreader. Well worth the $10 a month!
  • Hi
Don't know if this is up todate but you can find a few isps on here who have binary newsgroups
    http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm

I've never used the readers myself, I'm like the rest just use easynews 20gbs a month for under £6.00 ain't bad.

    Hope this helps

Plusnet have binary newsgroup feeds. Their starter broadband account (Broadband Plus) is £14.99 a month (up to 2M connection) and has unlimited dowloads BUT has an acceptable use policy. This penalises large downloads especially during peak hours so you might find heavy use of the binary newsgroups a bit slow going. They do a beefed up account for heavy users costing £21.99 a month but there is still an acceptable use policy. For totally unrestricted use they do a PAYG account which is unlimited as fast as it will go access, but you pay £1 a GB. Could get expensive !!! Newsgroups also available via dialup if you want to try first.

Pipex bundle an account with Giganews with their packages.

You get a 10GB per month limit to the Giganews newsfeed, and you can buy additional bandwidth.

Whilst most other ISPs have newsfeed, the binary sections are limited by lack of retention and completion. The dedicated feeds supplied by Easynews and Giganews are excellent but I dont know of anyone else other than Pipex who bundle a dedicated acct with their subscription.
