I have vista on laptop and xp on PC and now prefare vista - it never crashes and after you get used to the new layout its a breeze.

Xp looks so dated now and has more security issues than vista - and I agree that going with vista now will be a learning platform for Windows 7 later in a year or so when the first really stable version gets out.

  • I use Vista and so far no real problems
  • I want a netbook but don't want XP on it. Would put Win 7 on it though, waiting for a NC20 from Samsung

XP is not as secure as Windows Vista, even moreso if you use Internet Explorer.

As regards to save-a-lots comments, has he tried to see if there are updates to the drivers and software that he alledges won't work?

He that alledges has tried that avenue... still no joy
  • XP is better, Vista looks nicer, whichever you go for bear in mind that Windows 7 is out by end of this or next year.
  • I moved to vista to do my hardware justice (I wanted a proper 64 bit windows OS), it was a hard decison, XP was like an old friend who I'd become very comforatble in the company of. Over the next few months all but 1 of my machines followed the 1st, then the 1st machine gave win7 a go (still going).
Occasionally I am called to help my 'old friend' the XP lappy, and when I do I discover than my 'old friend' is actually a 'dirty old man' and I wonder how we ever got on.
The vista machines...I keep an eye on them...and have procedures in place to monitor/restrict the use, but 1 is used by a 16 yr old girl (virtually unrestricted and unmonitored) and 2 by 10 yr old boys, none of which cause me problems....my 21yr old (again) wife just checking ebay on an xp box, however...!!!!???

I suppose the short version is...vista with SP1 is very good!

Been using Vista64 since it was released, nearly all of the initial problems were caused by Nvidias DX10 gfx cards and very bad drivers. Since these have been fixed I've not had a single 'bluescreen' style crash. Vista is very stable.

You will get better backward compatability with Vista32 than Vista64 for older software though.
