The iPhone is a great consumer phone but it's a limited smartphone. Its strongest features are web surfing and the app store and of course it shares the entertainment capabilities of the iPod Touch. Email and texting is a faff though and the Blackberry will do a better job for this.

But the Storm itself has issues. The release software is reportedly very buggy. Also the Storm does not have wi-fi which is a smartphone must these days.

The Nokia 5800 is too new to comment on. It is fully featured but software reliability, annoying quirks and battery life are unknowns at this stage.

Mandark has basically given you the lowdown.

You probably also need to consider price as well, iPhone 3G is probably the most expensive and on par with the Storm in terms of price.

Nothing beats the iPhone in terms of web browsing and music etc. but it's not really much of a phone - for example you can't receive MMS messages, or forward texts.

The blackberry as you can guess is your business phone, if you need that then the blackberry is your best bet.

The 5800 is by far the cheapest and does everything well, it's not the best at everything, but it's OK, and the software is probably stable as its been out in Russia for quite a while now. The music quality I'm is the best of ANY smartphone according to the reviews - personally my ears can't notice that much difference. However you can view flash webpages which the iPhone and the storm can't (i think).

    So take your pick.

If I was buying though and price was important then i'd get the 5800. If money was not a problem I'd get the Storm. And if I just wanted to browse the web all day I'd get the iPhone.

Yes, I'd also add rash that if anyone is after a Blackberry they look at the Bold or the Curve models first before gambling with the Storm. They're probably more practical.

  • I'm guessing from your shortlist is that your main criteria is a cool touchscreen that you can play around with and surf the net on?

If you've already got an ipod or mp3 player I would ignore the iphone as you'll be paying around £100 for the phone when you can get others for free on a similar tariff. If you don't have an mp3 player and that's a big priority then the iphone is the obvious choice (the mp3 players on other phones are just nowhere near as good). I would also ignore the Nokia - they're still finding their feet with the touchscreen and it looks a bit clunky to me.

Blackberry storm is a possible and I think it looks quite nice, but it's also their first touchscreen and I've heard of quite a few niggles with it (although they have been releasing updates to sort out some of these).

I would definitely consider the G1 on T-Mobile (the Google phone). It's a bit chunkier than the others you mentioned but it is really nice to use and you can get it free on a £30 contract at the moment (the others will be £35 at least I think). Also if you're a bit techie (or even if not) you might like the fact you can download loads of applications to it much like the iphone.

As you might tell I've been researching phones for myself recently! I'm tempted by the G1 at the moment, but would also suggest you check out the new HTC Touch HD. The screen is amazing and the phone does look the part.

    Best of luck!
  • yeah lookin for a touch screen Is this HTC HD fone anygood ?
