Asking is a good idea as when you have your first there is so much you want to buy. A gym mat, bouncer, Sophie the giraffe for teething, a toy that hangs from the car seat handle or a Lamaze toy (basically anything suitable for under 6 months), etc. A Grobag (sleeping bag) is a fab idea as I had a 2.5 tog, 1 tog and 0.5 tog (depends on the season though). Also I would have loved someone to buy a Tuppence & Crumble star wrap as they are safe for use in car seats unlike pramsuits/snowsuits, they aren't too warm and don't affect how tight the straps can get. Mothercare vouchers are good as you can get so much there. My local one had free parking, baby classes upstairs and a Costa so I was sometimes there three times a week!

What I didn't like where all the cuddly toys as neither me or my daughter were interested and many bought ones that weren't even suitable for a baby if you looked at the label. So many people bought keepsakes but having a box full of them in the loft isn't that useful. I wouldn't have used most toiletries as they don't need much at first and then I used organic and paraben free stuff, so I still have the Johnsons free samples over a year later.

A nice thing a friend did for me was cook a hot lunch when she came to visit, bringing everything she needed, and then held tge baby while I ate. My mum also brought round the occasional homemade chicken & mushroom pie, lasagne, Toad in the Hole and chocolate brownie, as it was so hard to cook a proper dinner in the first months so I highly recommend doing that for anyone who's had a baby.

My best friend gifted me with a beautiful Mother and Daughter bracelet set, in which one bracelet comes with a key and the other with a Heart shaped lock. Daughter holds the key to Mummy's heart - how cute is that? I think this bracelet with a wonderful meaning is a great gift for a new baby.
