Anything but a teddy! :) We got so many and babies don't seem to be interested in them really, until they are much older.

I got vouchers for M&S which was lovely as I could shop for baby or myself when I felt ready. Also we were bought a baby bouncer (they asked what we needed!) and lot's of clothes in 3-6 month (basics like vests.) Photo album, magazines, bath stuff for mum- not too perfumey as it can irritate 'delicate' areas! Baby on board sign for the car- we still haven't got round to getting one and DD is 7 months! :) Money for the trust fund. A nice collectable such as peter rabbit plate or piece of silverware.

im pretty practical and friends asked me if there was anything i needed when i had mine, instead of clothes, toys etc i asked for nappies/formula etc it was good as it were bits that were actually going to get used and were always needed.doesnt sound like a great gift but to me it was.i recently made my friend up a changing bag with bits in which included maternity and breast pads, wipes, nappies, sudocream and baby bath bits, she loved it as she to liked practical bits.there are only so many toys and clothes that are needed and in the end i found a good percentage were never used or worn.

  • i'd two organic cotton nighties for DS with elasticated bottoms - it meant you could just pull them up to do nappy changes in the middle of the night. I absolutely loved them.

  • i would go with a nice home cooked meal to save either parent cooking or the takeaway idea. ive hired my friend a cleaner before for the first month after she had the baby so that she didnt have to worry about doing anything housework wise and could concentrate on baby and herself. cost me £120 but was worth every penny as she didnt have to lift a finger.

Iou notes To babysit, clean, cook a meal. I wish someone had offered to do those things instead of presents..You could pay for a massage for the mum or do it yourself.
A good one would be to do all her washing and ironing for the first few weeks.

They are great and my DD still wears hers occasionally at 22 months! OK they're a bit short in the arms but they aren't too tight. Being organic cotton they're a bit of a luxury too.

I agree on not buying baby clothes in newborn sizes. I have so many that haven't been worn. I had an 8lb baby but by the time I had washed and tumble dried her clothes newborn were too small. What I never seem to have enough of is muslin cloths, vests in larger sizes, dummies and socks.
