Just checked the rest of the first compost bag and managed to harvest a total of 3lb of potatoes from 2 seed potatoes. 3 bags to go still!!0 -
Hunters from Fothergills are what I planted too-in containers. Initially loads of healthy green foliage-its dying back now but there are lots of potato's in really good condition. Im just leaving them "in situ" and harvesting as required.
NB-I find that they are not as tasty as other varieties, but still nice-what does everyone else think?0 -
I grew the free Hunter seeds in a bed and I dug a couple of plants up last week, there were some huge potatoes in there, like large baking size and not just one or two, but loads.
I can't remember what they said they could be used for, but they've been pretty good as boiled new.
Can't be bothered to weigh them, but I'm sure it's the most I've ever grown from a single plant.
No slug damage either, which is always a problem here.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I guess its time to dig some up then - no point in waiting any longer for flowers - lots of greenery flopping over so lets see whats under the compost!!John0

I did have a look to see how they advise using them, but can't find any details about it, anybody remember?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

I googled the potato before and came up with this site: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/potpom/var/hunter/huntere.shtml
It says the Hunter potato is "excellent for boiling and baking, not acceptable for chipping and french frying." However, I have mashed, roasted and tonight I made chips from the potatoes and they taste great any way they are cooked IMO :j0 -

One plant harvested last night - one reasonable sized new potato - lots of little nodules on the roots which should be potatoes - I guess i need to leave them another month - and feed them!!John0
