Can an unlocked 3G phone be used on a 2G network?

I assume that it can but DH doesn't believe me!
Eg a phone bought from 3 network, to use on virgin after unlocking.

yeah that should work fine - virgin network is on 2g & 3g - 3 only have 3g.
the reason it won't log onto 3g at moment is because 3 sim can't log onto 2g - nothing to do with phone0 -
providing the option to use 2g is enabled in the phones settings, then yes0
