Personalised Number Plates

  • They're used these days to mask the age of cars to neighbours and friends. Just another business that could struggle in the credit crunch.
I love the ads that have to tell you what the plate means. Or the ones that say they've had it valued for x. (these companies also have 12 buyers in your area for your car/timeshare/kids etc for a fee).
All my cars come with a personalised plate. It's unique to my car. And whoever had the car first paid for it, not me.

My ex accountant had the plate N8 TAX - again the tactically placed screw trick in the middle of the 8 made it look like NO. I hear he was fined heavily by the DVLA. Serves him bloody right.

    You've been misimformed, then!

DVLA aren't in a position to fine anyone.

The Police may issue fixed penalty notices, which will be applied by the normal procedures.

DVLA have the option to withdraw the entitlement to display a registration, should they see fit.

Usually you will have 2 'warnings', before this happens.

You will not have any refund of any £$£$ paid for registration.

Here's a top money-saving tip for anyone thinking of getting a personalised number plate for their car: Instead of paying hundreds of pounds to a cherished number dealer, and £80 to the DVLA for the transfer, why not just change your name by deed poll to match the existing plate on the car - this only costs £33 all in.

This tip was passed on by my neighbour, Mr KL51AJN.

    :rotfl: Oh you're soooo funny:rolleyes:

Have you never specified an option on a car? A plate merely allows someone to personalise their car, and if bought wisely are actually an investment.

It sounds like a bit of jealousy has crept in, I have a private plate - and it didn't cost me anything - and if your really lucky you can get them for nothing - all you need to do is scan ebay and the like for cars for sale with old number plates on them that are applicable. Then buy car, transfer plate off, and sell car on again. I have done this three times. I made a profit of £200 on one car after I took the plate off, drew even on another, and lost £360 on the other - so worst case is I have three plates for the princely sum of £160 - and lets assume they are worth 50% of what they are advertised for - then that means I have plates worth £1500 (bear in mind that a plate with TVV 4T on it has very limited appeal, as does one with three initials - ones with two initials as long as its not X,W,V, etc do have more value - but only to people with those initials !

I originally did it because I need a smart/new car for work, but instead I bought a second hand car and have now put the plate on it and nobody knows its 5 years old - so Ive also saved half the cost of a new car.

Now that is what I call moneysaving.

Sems like a personal choice to me.
That said, there are some howlers out there.
Some owners think that they're plate really rocks when it actually needs explaining to your average punter.
Hate when letters/spaces/numbers are all moved about, that really sucks and is of course ilegal.

    .

Sounds good. Do the profits include the fees for putting the plate's onto retention/putting them on another car? Have you tried to sell the plates?

Also, doesn't the car need to be MOT'd and taxed to take the reg plate off it?

Vanity or not, buying a private reg plate makes more financial sense than buying a brand new car or buying any car for that matter. Historically they just don't depreciate and simply go up in value. You may look like a prat with the plate TVV 4T but you're a prat driving around with an appreciating asset. When you take into account the costs of motoring having something motoring related that just goes up in value is quite refreshing.
