Hmm and end up living in a country with a horrendous human rights record, a government infintely more oppressive than ours... at least we get the option to vote them out, some of the most polluted cities in the world, half the internet blocked, one child policy....
No thanks.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -

Yeah but where are you going to get better Crispy Duck?I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.0 -
I do enjoy speaking slang to such people. What's scary is the younger ones and the women pick up on the slang, an you have to explain to them that in certain situations you cannot use that language.PasturesNew wrote: »Why do people think learning a language is a passport to another country?
Have you HEARD the unintelligible English most foreigners manage here, even when they've lived here years or are educated/business people?
No it's not your still alive.PasturesNew wrote: »Really, it's too late to start learning now.
One of the major problems learning languages in the UK is that unless you live in the right part of a large city you don't have anyone to practise on.
I know people who speak 4 and 5 languages. Granted they learnt the first 2 when they were children. And they are the sort of people who decide they aren't fluent enough in a certain language so go off and improve it.PasturesNew wrote: »
And, already in this thread, there's been the suggestion of China (lots of different versions of the language there in any case) and Japan ... how many languages should somebody learn?
Any country you would like to do business in. The reason to learn the language is not for the meetings its for the networking and socialising afterwards.PasturesNew wrote: »Other countries learn English because English is the first business language. But which do WE choose?
I've met people who have worked in France and German, and while they were fine at work they had problems socialising because they had absolutely no grasp of the language and weren't interested in learning.
There as I've met other people who quickly realised they better learn to make life easier for themselves.
Go somewhere like Spain or Bulgaria. If you don't act like a typical drunken UK tourist people are really friendly.PasturesNew wrote: »I'm going nowhere. Never been abroad, scared ... and the US/Aus etc won't take me because of lack of skills they're after and age (major factor, they're SO ageist you know!)I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I think by Jim Rogers making his announcement his prophecy will be at least part self-fulling. Also I would presume he took out his positions long before making such a comment. Clever trader.0

guess shorting the pound AND TALKING IT DOWN, goes in hand with regard to these big currency players. not that they need to talk down the pound anyway with the way the economy is right now.Adele_Carr wrote: »I think by Jim Rogers making his announcement his prophecy will be at least part self-fulling. I can't imagine China being the place i'd most want to be if the !!!! hit the fan.
New zealand all the way.......so many sheep, so few hunters.
To quote my New Zealand husband "no one goes bust like a Kiwi".
Edit - I realise he might have to alter this to include the UK and Iceland

not quite as adventurous as some - I'd go to the Isle of Wight.0

well he put his money where his mouth is and bought in big then , owns about a trillionith of that market if its right.
People hes an !!! , or a market manipulator.
shorted the hell out of the big three banks in usa.Last time I watched him on bloom he said his money was all in gold and to get into it.HE is also quoted as saying recessions are for the rich to get richer.
Now he is saying to get into china , sorry but I was read the pied piper as a child....and not in mandarin.
I think he is a market driver , his market , on your money.Have you tried turning it off and on again?0 -
I have been encouraging my children to feel confident in languages. Not so they can move to China to be the next (perhaps) overpaid employee. No, just so they realise the world is their oyster and if they wish to choose a different base to increase their quality of life (and I don't mean money) then they can feel confident that they can do so.
I've also encouraged them in sport, art and music. So, when they are older they will be able to induldge in creative hobbies rather than sit on computers depressing themselves like their mother does on forums like this! (I know I should practice what I preach and pick up may sax again!)
There is far too much emphasis on money bringing happiness. I feel very lucky to know one of the richer people in this country and I also know he is no happier than I am. In fact, given some of his families troubles with health, he is arguably less happy.0
