Probably too late as she might of gone out and bought he car today.

Too expensive for that car, others car like yaris and fiesta are better. Should ideally pass your test first.
  • Hey thank you for all your comments ..

I have read them all through.
The situation has changed abit now after a morning of discussions. I am going to share a car with my boyfriend. I showed him your replies.

I want a car I can practice driving in as my instructor says im ready to be supervised out on the road. This will make me more confident and a better driver when I sit my test I hope :)

I cant use friends and familys cars as they all have new ones or sports cars which I couldnt get insured on and wouldnt feel happy driving.

Im not going to rule out the quicksilver as my boyfriend likes it as well, but if they accept his car in part exchange then its half the financial outlay for me and half the final decision.

He originally didnt want me to get a banger incase I got stranded somewhere, or had nothing but trouble with it, I know this could apply with a more expensive car as well though. He dosnt use his car much as he works all week, so its a good compromise.

I looked into the insurance , its group 5 and the quotes arnt terrible if I am a named driver.

I know I will now only own half a car, but thats another matter :)

    Thank you all again.

Be careful of insuring YOUR car in someone elses name and you as a named driver this is known as fronting and if the insurance company suspect that is what you are doing it might invalidate any claim.

Of cours if its your boyfriend's car you are driving and he is the main driver that is fine.

also just wanting to be a bit cautious - if yousplit (obviously hope you don't!) you need something in writing to say what will happen to the car - ie will one buy the other out? If so, how much will you give to him or he give to you??

Tread carefully buying something 'together' - you'll only have 1 name on the log book.........it's a hell of a lot of money to lose...........

If it works for you for now then it's probably best to share a car. Looking forward though, you have enough time to look around for a better deal than the pug. Maybe draw up a list of low insurance group vehicles, put suitable filters on ebay, then bookmark the search (and do same on pistonheads - I have some filtered searches bookmarked I look at every week in case a nice example pops up for a good price!).

The Toyota Yaris is probably more reliable than a pug, although I guess it depends on your tastes. Personally I don't like them ,they seem like a bit of a granny's car :) The Skoda Fabia Elegance is group 5 as well, cheap to insure, but again, doesn't look great (I own one - for the costs it cant really be beaten for economy, safety, reliability etc, just depends if you mind a skoda or not!). best to find a compromise between all your priorities. Like most advice with cars you always need to factor in personal taste.

Saying all that I think you can do better than the Pug at that price!

    Sorry for longish post.

arnold clark will rent you a dual control car for £9 an hour inc insurance, you will need to do a hell of a lot of practice before you ever cover the ammount extra it would cost to put a learner on your car insurance and their cars are the type the instructors use.
  • I suppose on my first visit the dealer did his job by making me go home and think I had to rush into a purchase. I read loads of sites on how to haggle a discount and I managed to only get £95 quid off :rotfl:

I am keeping an eye on autotrader, although alot of the nice cars advertised are miles from me, and although I did get the train and buses a few times to look at some I soon got fed up with that. I think the Micra and Yaris look a bit old fashioned , I did like the Corsa and Clio though.

I am still thinking about that little pug, it does look immaculate and has only had one owner and done 40k miles...

What a cracking idea about hiring a duel control car. I never even considered that.

Arnold Clark dosnt have any branches near me but I am certainly going to look into that. Maybe I can find somewhere close to me.

I thought everyone drove in cars apart from their instructors to practice these days.
The driving sites inc the official ones say I need as many practice hours as lessons.

About sharing a car with my boyfriend, Im not foolish enough to think we could be together forever. He has said it can be in my name if I want, though that would be selfish , so I would get something drawn up if we go down that road (pun intended).

    :D

You have all made me think about this a bit more, I do appreciate it.

Ebay and gumtree are other places you can look on cars. If you really fancy the 206 then get one, but not at that price! You can get better for that sort of money anyday.

I had a quick look on ebay and 2002 cars go for around £2000-£2300, not sure whether your trim cost more. You can always pay the AA, RAC for a vehicle inspection on a car you are going to buy , cost about £150? It's still a lot cheaper than the garage price and some save money can be put aside for the car's repair bill if needed.

For different reasons not everyone has use of other car while learning, of course this will help greatly.

You bf can help to view cars on his off day? I know you are probably itching to get the car asap as it's your first. I must stress, take your time as it's a buyer's market with plenty of cars around. I've had about 6 cars over the past decade and each one took me at least 2 months to find, from bmw to fiesta for £600.

Just concentrate on what you can reasonably afford at this stage. Once you have your licence and a year or so of experience (no claims discount) everything becomes that much more affordable.
