Buying first car tomorrow . .

Options
I have been to look at a car at a local dealers today. It will be my first car.

My brother has test driven it for me as im still a learner. The dealer has shown me a HPi certificate and says it comes with a 3 month mechanical warranty. I have seen the MOT , service history V5 and paper work.

We will be paying £3600 for it. A 2002 peugeot 206 quiksilver.
The dealer wants £200 in cash tomorrow for a deposit then it will have a pre service and I can pay the balance next week.

Is there any protection if I pay with a credit card or debit card ? Or is it standard practice to get a bankers draft ?

Is there any other things I should be checking or looking out for before I part with my money ?

The car is in nice condition with low mileage. Its a good price, its what I was looking for, its what I budgeted for, but I feel physically sick thinking of spending so much and my tummy is in a ball . .
This will be the most expensive thing I have ever bought.

Anything I have missed , or advice please ?

you get protection paying by credit card from your card company, so probably best. I would consider paying deposit by card as well if possible.

If it's a lot of money, then have a think about it for a week or two, dont be rushed or pressured into buying. get a banger i the meanwhile if you need something. tbh I don't think the price is anything special for the car in question, probably normal book price.
    matched betting: £879.63
  • a quick search on autotrader finds that car on 2004 reg for same money from other dealers
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction
  • May i humbly suggest to go with the feelings churning your tummy over.

Nothing wrong with the 206 as such, but thats a lot of money for your first car, and unless you are very lucky will cost a fortune to insure fully comp.
They really are not the most reliable of vehicles either.

There's thousands of small cars for sale, and to be honest the money you are going to pay for this 206 would buy you a Yaris, which is a far better and more reliable car than the Pug will ever be.

Take a step back, and have a look round for something like a 106 or similar, preferably zest3 spec, power steering, central locking, airbag etc, and you'll probably get a very nice one for about 700 to 1000 pounds.

Another good first car is the Micra, alright they don't set the heart on fire with good looks, but they are typically Japanese to drive which means light, pleasant and easy.

If you prang it, its 700/1000 up the wall, i hope you don't but its something highly likely to happen in the first year or two of motoring.

Edit, by the way that 3 months mechanical warranty isn't worth the paper its written on.

Good luck with your test by the way.

Personally I would hold back from buying until you have passed your test and then buy a cheaper first car, use it for 6/12 months then invest in a better car.

Have you priced insurance for a learner and a full licence holder?

Without sounding too negative, what if you don't pass you test first time? No point having a car sitting there doign nothing.

Also, unless someone can correct me, isnt the Quicksilver more of a 'warm' hatch? ie. wouldnt it be pricey to insure.

As a first car, I would be looking at spending under £2000 and getting something like a 1 litre Corsa which is cheap ro insure and cheap to fix if it goes wrong.

pass the test and then buy the car.

dont buy the peugeot. you will find better for less.
    and cheaper insurance.
the 206 looks ok,thats about it, the seats are terrible and it isnt too reliable and is quite expensive for spares. my gf has one.
    ...work permit granted!
  • All very sound advice.....walk away from the deal.
In another couple of months dealers are going to be giving cars away........new ones at that !!!!!!
Oh and by the way if you were going to pay by CC they would probably (will ) make a charge of around 3% for doing so.

Sounds expensive and some goog advice on here. Having said my daughter was insured in her own car from her 17th Birthday. Got inyeresting the following year when asked how many years no claims discoint (ie 1) and how long have you held full a licence ...9 months.

Most of the insurance companies couldn't compute that anomaly.

At your stage I would limit my search to group 1 or 2 cars. Insurance if your a girl will be around £1,000 and could be as much as £2,000 if your a bloke (and thats on small cars). Have you had an insurance quotes?
