I know quite a few people who have been made redundant, had their hours cut, have lost long-standing contracts, or have been asked to take pay cuts. I think that if the only thing you've seen is Woolies, you are very lucky."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0

I might have agreed with you a few months back, but not now.
11 people were made redundant at Mrs Cleaver's work last week and she spent the week obviously concerned that she would also be one of them. She wasn't, but the company obviously needs to but costs so she may be at risk in the future. We'd be okay financially on one salary, but it's still not a nice feeling.
I work in a role where the people who work with me are often brought in on short term roles, fixed term etc. I have noticed that it is harder to attract people to these sorts of roles and we're starting to lose people to substantive, permanent jobs as at the moment they opt for extra security at the cost of financial reward.
I see what you're saying in your post. One of the interesting aspects, I guess, of this recession is that it's the first one of this new media driven age. What did we have during the last main recession? Newspapers, BBC, ITV and C4 news a couple of times a day and that was it. The internet and digital age means that information is unrecognisable compared to ten or twenty years ago. So whilst I think this recession is obviously bad, the fact that each of the thousands of media outlets is trying to make their coverage the most exciting, outrageous and startling probably doesn't help matters. You feel as though you're in a endless cocoon of bad news.0 -
Your mate Pickles should be able to fill you in on 47 redundancies. Maybe 48 if he's not been so lucky himself. There was a press release about it somewhere.0

Watch the news every night I would suggest.FungusFighter wrote: »Seems to me everyone thinks the sky is falling in becaue the papers and telly tell them it is.

I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0 -
In the takeaway last night, there wasn't anybody waiting - and the phone wasn't ringing every 2 minutes with phone orders. My order was also handed to me much faster than usual.
The price of chilli beans is up in Tesco
Price of bread flour is up in Tesco
Price of baked beans has gone up about 20% for Tesco own brand, low sugar/salt in 4-packs. About £1.48 now instead of about £1.24.
So it's more expensive to buy basics and cook food myself ... but a lot easier to pop out for a takeaway.
Oh .. and I can't find jobs to apply for and when I apply for others I could almost do I hear nothing back.0 -
Most of OH's colleagues now made redundant, their main operations shut down, now just operating from small north east operation.
Lack of jobs and too much competition for jobs that exist (first hand experience), plus jobs availabe being much lower than I need, hence I keep getting the 'brilliant candidate but overqualified' tune. I also have a number of friends who cannot get jobs at the moment, all of them bright and hard working people.
I live near Nissan North East.. many friends and former schoolfriends made redundant.
High street shut downs - Woolies, Marks & Spencer food, local stationers (been there over 100 years), 3 cafe's, an ebay shop, two clothes shops, a fireplace shop, large co-op and more that I can't even remember what they were before shut down. Around 40% of our local high street is now boarded up, only new entrants have been Tesco's.
Just found out the place I work for has had two new contracts suspended due to lack of funding. This was going to keep me in work in the long-term, now not sure if I will be full or part time from next week. Same company have lack of projects in the rest of the country so are getting rid of temp construction staff so that they can move their perm staff up here.
Huge number of for sale boards around. Nothing selling.. live in a desirable area and still no one buying. OH's family friend is local estate agent, same story.
Edit: Forgot to add, member of our family lost half their savings in NR shares, then later the other half in BB.I'll have some cheese please, bob.0
