Have you got a mute button somewhere?

Also try this, go to Start | Control Panel | System

Click the Hardware tab

Click Device Manager

Click Sound, Video Controllers, find the Realtek

Right Click it and click uninstall

Click your way through to agreeing to uninstall

Close every thing off and reboot. Hopefully it should find the device

Mute definitely not on. Tried the device manager uninstall as well and still nothing!

and the actual Windows mute isn't checked?
double click on the speaker on the taskbar and make sure there isn't a check mark in the mute box

no there isnt. and when i try and play through i tunes the graphics move up and down as though sound is playing but it isnt! But actually it is only got a headphones icon there and nothing else, is that normal??

no it isn't. I think it is time to try a system restore to an earlier date

I have clicked on MIXER and for the i tunes and windows applications the sound graphics aren't moving

yes have tried it twice and both times says it has been unsuccessful
