how can bmw tell whether it has been clocked from the key- the advert has gone from autotrader but i can assume that autotrader will have access to it if required by trading standards

if he decides to keep the car and leave the mileage as it is- next time he takes it to bmw for a service are they going to flag this and if so what action will they take if they realise it has been clocked?

Take your key into any BMW dealer and ask them to print out EVERYTHING the car has been in for. It will give you dates, mileages etc. Then you can take it back to the tvvat you bought it off and demand a refund - if it appears to hev been clocked

You will only be able to get the service history from the BMW dealer who did the last service (and only if that dealer has requested it previously)

Or just take your key into any BMW dealership and they will put it into a small little green decvice on the desk that they can get all the cars info from...

    1. Most dealers sell their cars with non-warranted mileages (unless they are 100% certain the mileage is correct, which is difficult) to avoid this type of allegation.

    2. Even if the car has been clocked, assuming the dealer didn't mis-represent the mileage, then you'll have to prove he clocked it. Perhaps it was clocked by someone before the dealer who sold it got it?

    3. You could report the matter to TS, and if they've a number of complaints about the specific dealer, chances are he is the one clocking and they will investigate. Otherwise they'll just file the complaint.

    4. Now you know the mileage to be inaccurate, if you try and sell the vehicle as having genuine mileage, you might find TS coming after you! Just sell it as unwarranted mileage.

    Utter bollox!

I know hundreds of dealers who warrant the cars mileage. That includes me.
Anyone who can't warrant the mileage are to be avoided to be honest...
  • if i report to TS then will it affect the history of the car and show up as an issue when an hpi is done against it in future

How can you possibly warrant the mileage on a used car unless you are certain of it history?

e.g. if you bought a car off me, how do you know it's genuine? How would you know whether I've clocked it, or whether I've fitted a new speedo? How would you know what had happened to it before I owned it?

How would you guarantee the mileage of a car bought in auction (unless it was specifically bought warranted, most of which are not sold this way at auction), which, to be honest, is where many dealers pick up their used stock from?

What difference does it make? You know the mileage is wrong - you can't try and pretend to any buyer it is correct (unless you plan on acting dishonestly).

Its quite easy really. You look at the service history and check up on its veracity. If you can't do that, you can't warrant the mileage.
