Our houseis only 15 years old and I've been told that cavity wall insulation will automatically have been done - is this right? I am on a mision to become as energy efficient as poss. If not how do you know if your house already has it?

  • We had a bloke come round to see if we could have cavity wall insulation. We have a 1930's semi and he said that we couldn't have it because there were bits of rubble inside the cavity  Does anyone know why this means we can't have it? Does it really matter that are some old bricks in there? Is there any alternative?

Well it depends how many - if the cavity was full of rubble there'd be no space for insulation.

An alternative is to insulate on the inside or the outside of the wall - either is a major operation. I've insulated on the insides of my (solid) walls with a mixture of mineral wool filled dry-lining and foam-backed plasterboard. It's expensive and you lose space in the rooms.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
