  • Be careful when choosing to have your cavities filled with foam... Cavity walls are designed to have cavities in them; if you fill them they will no longer work as designed and this could create damp problems. You may find that instead of damp dripping down to the bottom of the wall and draining out, it will collect in air bubbles in the foam and will find a way out - usually through the wall...

  • We had it done in the summer a few years ago, not long afterwards we fitted a brand new window opening and it became apparent that they hadn't put any insulation in at all, they resurveyed, apologised and re-did it. It did make a difference in the end, but make sure you view the empty bags of insulation after the job is complete, otherwise somebody else may end up with your insulation and you would be no wiser.

  • we recently moved into our first place ans we are looking at things like this to have done. However, it seems that our build is solid - concrete to be precise. The walls are quite thick, but just wondering what concrete walls are like for heat loss compared to brick/stone built ones and other related info.

not sure if this is right thread for it but thought I'd ask anyway.. thanks.

well as I type I can hear the wall in front of me being filled with something so hopefully our walls will be filled. More worrying when you hear the mortar dropping down the cavity from upstairs, rattles a lot on it's way down....

I've been comparing my gas consumption for the past 2 years. I'm delighted to report that i used 23% less this past year ( August 04 to Aug 05) than the previous year ( 03 to 04). I'm so thrilled, but unsure how i've made such a huge saving!!
I've had cavity wall and loft insulation fitted, and we now use the shower, rather than bath (both water and heating are all gas), and last winter, we're more careful about when we put the heating on..but can all this really make such a difference?!!

:j youmust be chuffed. We had our loft done (walls already done) in Jan and also have started using shower more than bath. We are now careful with the heating and had a shiny new energy efficient condensing combi bolier fitter end of last year, so fingers cross I can do similar to you :D

ive just got my gas bill today and it is worse than any other winter quarter even though ive had cavity wall/loft insulation and a brand new combi boiler so i dont think its all done much for us and i have not changed the way i live if anything i thought i was being more careful this time as i really tried to be energy efficient!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm just glad that none of it cost me anything it was all part of regeneration scheme if i had paid for all that i'd be very upset!

do you mean the latest bill is the same amount money wise or the gas used is the same?

no it's a lot more money! it says £211 it has never been this high i know gas has gone up but what i need to do is see if the units used is roughly the same as last year to see if it is just due to the increase in cost or if perhaps we should bring back the old boiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and empty the cavities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was really looking forward to a cheaper gas bill!!!!!!!!!!!!
