Are Richer Sounds allowed to charge me a restocking fee?

Seems more than reasonable to me to charge a restocking fee... if an item has been "opened" then the next customer who purchases it is going to demand discount of that particular item.

Maybe simply ask them to reduce it a little bit in consideration of the condition? I know richer sounds are quite leniant in this respect. Dont resort to just buying online simply because a retailer needs to cover themselves for losses....

Do the distance selling reg's apply if the item is used by the purchaser before being returned?

    As to the question:
How am I supposed to know if it's an item that suits my needs and sounds right with my setup without taking it out of the box?

That's why it pays to buy from a reputable dealer rather than a box shifter. I like Richer Sounds, but I bought my current system from a local dealer who let me take three different demo systems home and live with each for a week before deciding what to buy. When the amp I bought failed after 6 months (under warranty), they loaned me a demo amp until mine was replaced by the manufacturer. I paid a little more than I would from a box-shifter, but the service I recieved was well worth it.

    Yes, they do.

However, it's up to the purchaser to take care of the items until they're returned. If you damage it, you could find yourself in court.

Interestingly though, the DSRs don't generally apply if you go to a store to look at an item, and then go home and order the same thing online.

Eh? How on earth does that work?

If you order something online, how can anyone know if you've previously looked at it in a shop?

Mind you, it's an appallingly drafted document. For a start, who sells distance?

I have no idea how it works, nor how such a thing would be implemented. But that's what the law says.

If you've already inspected something before buying it, you're not "distant purchasing" it.
