Krakow is one of the easiest place to visit independently. Even if you fly into Katowice rather than Krakow, it's easy to get the airport bus into Krakow proper (though it's not the most comfortable ride, given the choice I'd rather fly straight into KRK).

These are my favourite apartments, http://www.grodzka.net.pl/ I've recommended them on here many times. I've got no connection with them, other than being a very satisfied repeat customer. They have other tourist apartment blocks as well, Szczepanska is nice as well, but IMHO Grodzka is a little nicer.

They also have a travel agency (which is in the lobby of the Grodzka block) and will collect you from the airport and can arrange trips to the Salt Mines or Auschwitz. Both are easy to do on your own though, you don't need to take a tour, but if you go to the mines on your own check first what times the English tours are if you don't speak Polish.

There is a tour agency on every corner in Krakow though, and they all charge pretty much the same, so if you prefer to do it that way you'll have no difficulty arranging it.

It's a beautiful city, and even though the main centre is small, there is so much in the area that even in a week you'll not fit it all in.

EDIT: oh and if you want something a bit different, try the http://www.crazyguides.com/ tours, they are very silly, but fun, and take you to places a bit further off the main tourist routes.

These apartments look amazing and well priced too. And if I can book other things from there they would be ideal. Will check them out a bit more.

Complimentary in some hotels but 5zl in other places. Check their website.

I've checked it and it seems they have different ways of doing it in different cities, which I didn't know about - probably because I'd be to cheap to pay for them so don't look. They're very useful though - I wonder what it would it would take to make them free everywhere?
  • Stayed at this apartment over valentines a couple of weeks ago. Is hands down one of the most impressive places we've stayed ever.

The couple that run the apartments were very helpful in sorting out anything else or giving recommendations. As before Zakopane, Salt mines (name escapes) and Autzwitz (sp?) are all worth the day trip and easily accessible by a number of companies.

Airport Bus into Krakow was ok although I had no idea where I was when I got to the Bus Station and ended up in a cab which took me round a corner to the apartment... Train back was a little better and you can pay on the train as well which was easier than working out the ticket office.

NordicHouse Apartments are located in the very heart of the Old Town of Krakow, only 40 meters from the famous Main Market Square.

Wizzair fly to Katovice Airport, you can get a flight from Doncaster/Sheffield on 1st June returning 8th June for less than £60 just now. You can also book the Wizzair shuttle bus on the website for £20 if i remember right. Bus drops you off at main train station.

I went to Krakow in November & had a good time. The city is compact & easy to get around, you can probably cover most sites in 2-3 days with an extra day for Auschwitz alone. Didnt visit the Saltmines, but all the taxi drivers i spoke to recommended it! Have heard that Zakopane is really nice, so you could maybe split your time between the two.

One thing that is worth doing is rafting through the Dunajec Gorge - about 40 miles south of Krakow off the road to Zakopane. There are plenty of coach trips from Krakow that include it.

And don't worry - it's very sedate. Grannies do it. The raft is steered for you by two boatmen in national costume and unless it rains you won't get wet. You get offered a life jacket but no one takes them up on it.
