Poland help

I am thinking of going to Poland in June this year for about a week and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on good accommodation and people to book tours through. Looking at staying in Krakow and want to do the salt mines and Auschwitz. Looking at booking it all separate as otherwise it's going to cost me about £600 to book a coach tour or something similar. Many thanks in advance for any help.

I've done this twice via Shearings overnight coach, which is tiring but fun.
But we stayed in Zakopane and had tours to Auschwitz and the Salt Mines as well as other optional tours. I don't think it cost anything like £600 even with single supplement.
If you're interested in Zakopane, it's a lovely small town (but has a bit of a traffic problem). Very touristy in a good way, ie plenty of buzz, easy to walk around. Anyway, the hotel was the Czerny Potok, and I would definitely recommend that (although check Trip Advisor - don't have the room above the bar, but anything else is quiet and they have a swimming pool). Lovely people, and I would go back again in a year or so (went two years running).
Would do the Shearings thing again, too.

Shearings are doing a coach tour this year but it is over £600 without the single supplement. Infact all the coach ones I have looked at are over £600. But thanks anyway.'Proud to be dealing with my debts'20p savers= £158.00 :T DFW Nerd #1061Nectar points 3514 Boots Ad Card £21.3031/01/10 Loan 1 = £6058, Loan 2 = £8896, Caravan Loan = £12980, HSBC CC = £0 :j Car = £0 :j, Loan 3 = £2490, Overdraft = £0 :j0

What kind of place are you thinking of? There are loads of good hostels, and for hotels I'd suggest looking at the standard websites first. You don't need to book a tour: everything you want to do can be arranged locally. There are loads of buses to Auschwitz (or get the local train to Oswiecim, the town's new name), and hotels/hostels will have details of local tours to the salt mines. Independent booking is much better as tours from here to there haven't really taken off - plus there's so many airlines running the route you're bound to pick up a good deal somewhere (try Wizzair, Ryanair and easyJet).0

Oswiecim, the town's new name: posted by omelette451
Slight correction here.Oswiecim has always been the town's name.German speakers couldn't pronounce it,hence Auschwitz,The same happened with others, notably Wroclaw, renamed Breslau.
Briggsy.notts-Hoverland from Walsall stayed in Zakopane in the Kasprowy hotel-V.nice.Just been on their website and this year's brochure isn't finalised yet.May be worth a look.0 -
If you book far enough in advance you should be able to get a reasonably priced flight with one of the budget airlines depending on where you live. We flew Ryanair and stayed at the Ibis in Krakow at about £45 a night per double room whether dual or single occupancy. We did both the salt mines and Auschwitz and booked both tours through the hotel reception. I'm sure with a bit of work you could get the whole trip for well under the £600 you quote.
May I say one thing. I think everybody, given the chance, should visit Auschwitz and especially young people. I've been lucky enough to travel to many places in the world but Auschwitz has to be the most moving place I have ever seen. Man's inhumanity to man can't be imagined unless you've been to Auschwitz.Age & Treachery Will Always Overcome Youth & Enthusiasm !!

Sorry - I wasn't aware of that. Still, if you try to get a train that's the place you need to ask for.0 -

Agreed. And leave a whole day for it - you may not need it but you really don't want to feel rushed there.0 -

Absolutely. I once told a Pole that I'd been to Auschwitz town-not a good idea! I was promptly told Oswiecim is the town-Auschwitz is the Nazi camp.Exit, suitably chastened.
Southern Poland is beautiful and so worth a visit,though.0
