Remember that decent gloves & boots are equally important. Although I must admit that I do wear normal trousers/jeans for day to day riding & keep the leather/protective pants for longer rides.
Primark long johns are also good insulation for winter riding & a fraction of even Aldi or Lidl's price.

Pogofish, please remember that the majority of accidents happen close to home. You are far more likely to have an accident going to work than you are on a longer trip. You are more relaxed going on familiar roads to work and don't have as much awareness as you would on a longer trip. My accident was only a few miles from home on the way to work.

You can buy Kevlar lines jeans from a company called Hood. They are not that expensive and will help save your legs if you're dragged along a road. There's a good review site of some bike kit on this site http://www.bobpickett.co.uk/bkit/kit.htm (hope I'm allowed to post links in this forum-if not, let me know and I'll edit my post).

Wearing long johns under kit is a good idea though. When you're cold, your concentration drops, so you're much more likely to crash.

Off to wrap up warm and take my bike for a spin shortly...hope that sun keeps shining for me!

A textile jacket with armor in the elbows, shoulders and (preferably) back would be better than most cheap leather jackets as they are waterproof as well as protective.

Gloves are available in hundreds of colours and sizes, so any Motorbike dealer/accessory shop will be able to help out there.

Kevlar Jeans will protect your legs without looking to 'bikey': Draggin, RedRoute and Bulletproof are a few brands to look out for.

The helmet you bought from eBay, is it new? And is it the right size? A second-hand helmet can be a false economy as it may have been damaged internally, without showing any damage to the outside. Size is really important, as you don't want it coming off in an accident. Put the helmet on, get someone to hold it and try and turn your head. If you can move your head around in the helmet (or look up and down) then it is too big.

Look out for my hubby then-he'll be the grumpy looking one getting stroppy when people get in the way of him photographing the bikes! He writes for UMG and his photographer (ME!) is off on a shopping weekend, so can't attend the show this time. He'll be there on Sunday.

Enjoy the show-don't be afraid to ask for a discount if you're buying a few things from a stand. Get chatting to as many people as possible and pick up loads of tips. You can get some fab deals there, so make a list of things you may need. I bought an Oxford Boss disc lock one year for £30 and it's on the list of security things in the insurance forms, so reduces my insurance slightly. Good to know they rate it as being very secure too.

Thank you. I have managed to win some items on eBay. I have a leather jacket, trousers and a helmet. All I need now are some gloves and I can then book my CMT Moped training :D

:eek::eek:Please don't use a second hand helmet, even if it looks fine, it could have been dropped and damaged which will reduce it's protective ability:eek::eek::eek:

HI I am just looking into doing my CBT and at the moment dont have any gear to wear. I know to get a new crash helmet. Does anyone know of any good deals at the moment and what to look out for ?

Can anyone recommend a good jacket to get, boots and gloves ? I am not sure if to go for leather or man made for both the leggings n jacket ?

Maybe I should have said this is not to ride a moped but done with the intention to ride a 125cc then moving onto a 500cc or higher. I am a total novice in this area and as yet have never riden a motorcycle or bought any kit to wear.

The choice between leather or man-made is really up to you and what you'd feel most comfortable in, it's more about the padding or plating which as long as you buy stuff that meets all the british standards etc you should be fine. Bike shows and rallies normally have good deals, but I can't think of any shows that are coming up and rallies are more a summer thing.

Motorcycle outfits are expensive. I'm sure when riding a Moped you don't need the entire leather motorcycle outfit do you? Do you know what would be reasonable to wear on a Moped? Would a simple puffer jacket be alright and just waterproof trousers to fit over your normal wear?

Kimberley, how do you know the helmet you bought off eBay will fit? Seriously, that is one of THE most important things.

You must must must wear exactly the same protective gear of a moped as you would on a motorbike, you are still doing 30+mph on it so are going to suffer the same damage as if you were driving a bike. There's no difference...

  • Good luck with your CBT, I have to say I came off when I did mine. It hurt a lot even though I had protective gear on. I wouldn't go anywhere with at least jacket, boots, helmet and gloves, and t maddens me when I see people leaving college in hoodies or high heels! Its madness!

Make sure you have good clothing, I must say for gloves and boots if you want them, I got mine from my local honda bike shop, not to expensive and very good quality.(If this isnt allowed let me know and ill edit). Good luck and enjoy riding

Hi I have found this crash helmet for £25...its new does this seem ok or should there be something else I need to have a helmet have ?

    http://www.topgearsuperstore.com/-motorcycle-helmets/nitro-crash-helmets/gmac-maxx-black-motorcycle-crash-helmet-p-5760.html

Or is this one below at £50 more of the type in thing I should be looking to get ?

I want to be as safe as I can for the best price I can in true money saving style...

Also got a question about boots are ankle one's ok to get or is it better to have longer one's ?
