    I remember years ago that you could get free dialup access at certain times. You got the CD from the local garage, think it was Esso stations. It was fine for a while the free period keep being extended.

    One of them was called X-Stream & you dialed up using an 0800 number, they ran advert banners across the top of the screen.

    I started my FreeStuff site way back in 1999 using them

    I remember using X-Stream, 0800 access at the weekends, sometimes during the evenings too.

    Unfortunately swallowed up by Tiscali eventually... :(

    Yes this really was a boob! There are tons of ISPs out there who offer free dial-up, email etc. and then charge you up to 4p per minute on an 0845 number. None of them are free. I used to use https://www.aardvaak.net who offer a very good service and excellent if you want a back-up dial-up ISP. BUT still an 0845 number.
