I will have a look at that site you mentioned.
Just looking at the site-a lot of food seems to be out of date though? Is it worth buying or am I going to end up throwing loads away?
The whole premise of the site is that they sell food past its "best before" date. This DOES NOT mean that's it's not edible, just that the manufacturers cannot guarantee that it's in absolutely peak condition after that date. There's a world of difference between "best before" and "sell by" or "use by" dates. Please don't tell me you chuck out food after its "best before" date !
I just used up a tin of pineapple from the very back of the cupboard that was about 8 years after the "best before" date and it was perfectly fine.0 -
No I have used things after the best before date but always before the use by date(within reason)-it's a pity they don't put the use by date on there as well as the best before date.I took the plunge and ordered anyway.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

If a product has a "best before" date there will be no "use by" date, it's one or the other as the things with a "best before" date won't perish, they will just become a bit stale-tasting but that could take years. I've ordered loads of things from that site and everything has been lovely. Have you seen the price of their Ryvitas by the case? They're almost free! Those Suso lemon drinks are lush and they're almost free as well.
Don't forget to order as much as humanly possible up to the maximum weight of 30 kilos to get the most out of the (very reasonable) £5 delivery charge. I hope you enjoy everything in your order.
You might want to have a peek at the Food Bargains website as well: recently they were offering Walkers Sweet Thai Chilli crisps for a couple of quid for a case. Might be good for lunch-box treats.0 -

Are food bargains the same price as approved foods?0

Not the same but similar. Why don't you check them out for yourself? I did do half of the work for you and provide a link. Food Bargains delivery charge for mainland UK is £4.99 where Approved Foods is £5.250

Hi Toomuchdebt:hello:
Could the kids be in charge of baking their treats? Muffins/cakes/flapjacks etc? That could save money and give them more responsibility ?
There is a whole thread dedicated to how much people spend under their particular circunstances . Grocery shopping budget thread. Also the Grocery challenge is a good one to follow so you can also see what others spend
I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the ideas together
thanks:)

Thanks zippy-I will take a look at those 2 threads.I have a very old cooker which uses loads of electricity so I'm not convinced that baking at home would be any cheaper than buying if there's an offer on.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

My DD has a family of 7 all told and she spends in the region of £120-30 per week so if you can do it on £100 you are doing very well.True she has two large teenagers that eat the same as adults. She is constantly cooking for the cake tin as her three little boys aged 10.8 & 5 can empty a tin of cakes in seconds
P.S. 'Best before' doesn't mean it will kill you the next day. I use the guaranteed 'nose' test if it smells o.k. and hasn't got anything 'furry ' growing on it then its probably fine0
